Samagri list

A general list. Your pandit may add or leave out items for your tradition, so confirm it with them.

Significance and when it is done

Garbhadhan Sanskar (गर्भाधान संस्कार, Sanskrit गर्भाधानम्) belongs to the category of Samskaras, the life rites that mark the stages of a Hindu householder's journey. It is counted as the first samskara. Its purpose is straightforward and gentle: prayers offered by a couple for a healthy, virtuous child.

The deities invoked are Vishnu and Prajapati. Vishnu is worshipped as the preserver, and Prajapati as the lord of creation and progeny. The rite is therefore both a prayer and a formal beginning, held before conception in most traditions.

Families usually plan it after marriage, at a time that suits the couple and the household. The wider family often treats it as the first ceremony of the next generation. Because traditions differ, the exact timing, the mantras used and the portions included vary from family to family and from region to region. A qualified pandit will confirm the details that suit your tradition.

Who performs it and who should attend

The ceremony is performed by the couple themselves, with a pandit guiding the vidhi. It is an in-person rite only; it is not conducted online. Attendance is usually kept to close family. Elders from both sides often attend, and in many households the couple's parents take part in specific steps such as the giving of blessings.

Because the rite concerns the couple directly, their comfort and privacy matter. Families may keep the gathering small. There is no fixed rule about how many people should attend; this is a matter of family custom.

Vidhi step by step (outline)

The following is an outline only. The full vidhi is longer, and the pandit will adapt it to your tradition.

Note that there is no havan in this rite as listed here. Typical duration is about 1 h 30 min, depending on the tradition and how much is included.

Preparing the samagri and the space

Samagri is best gathered a day or two in advance. The full list for Garbhadhan Sanskar is:

Set aside a clean, quiet space, ideally where the family usually keeps a mandir or performs puja. Keep the samagri in one tray so nothing is hunted for mid-rite. Yellow cloth is used in the setup, and the kalash is filled with water and Ganga jal according to the pandit's instruction. Ask the pandit in advance whether anything additional is needed for your family's tradition.

Regional variations

Garbhadhan Sanskar is observed differently across regions and communities. North Indian and South Indian households may follow different sequences and different sets of mantras. Smarta and Vaishnava traditions also differ in emphasis, as do families who follow amanta or purnimanta reckonings of the calendar. Some families include more of the rite; others keep a shorter form.

Where customs differ, this guide does not pick one as correct. The pandit you invite will follow the tradition you belong to, and it is worth telling them at the time of booking which one that is.

After the puja: prasad, daan, dos and don'ts

After the rite, prasad is distributed, usually beginning with elders. Daan, or giving, is a customary part of the close; the pandit will guide what is given and to whom. The couple traditionally receive blessings from those present.
