What a muhurat is
A muhurat is a chosen window of time, selected from the panchang, for beginning something that matters. In the classical approach, the purpose is not to force an outcome but to start an important act in harmony with the day's rhythm. The muhurat list on this page covers Vivah Muhurat, Griha Pravesh Muhurat, Mundan Muhurat, Namkaran Muhurat, Annaprashan Muhurat, Vahan Kharid Muhurat, Property Purchase Muhurat and Business Opening Muhurat. Each of these is a beginning of its own kind, and each is weighed against a different set of considerations.
The panchang limbs a muhurat checks
A muhurat is read from the panchang, the traditional almanac of the day. The limbs most often consulted are the tithi, the vara, the nakshatra, the yoga and the karana. To these are added the lagna, or rising sign, and the position of the Moon, since the Moon's nakshatra is central to most muhurat calculations. Certain periods within the day, such as Rahu Kalam and Yamaganda, are set aside, while others, such as Abhijit, are favoured for particular acts.
Different ceremonies weight these limbs differently. A Vivah Muhurat gives close attention to the seventh house and to the couple's charts, while a Griha Pravesh Muhurat looks to the stability of the house and the direction of entry. A Namkaran or Annaprashan Muhurat is usually simpler, and a Vahan Kharid or Property Purchase Muhurat is read with the buyer's own chart in view.
Limits of a general muhurat list
A general list can only show windows that are broadly suitable. It cannot see your janma rashi, your dashas, or the specific house and nakshatra that your own chart emphasises. Traditions also differ: North and South Indian panchangs may reckon the lunar month differently, and Smarta and Vaishnava customs may observe ekadashi and other days by separate rules. Amanta and purnimanta month systems likewise give different month names for the same day.
For these reasons, the dates here are best treated as a starting point. Take them to a qualified jyotishi or your family priest, who can match them to your chart and to your family's custom before you fix a final time.
