Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise; times are IST for New Delhi. Confirm the exact time for your city and family with your priest.
Griha Pravesh is the first entry into a new home. In the classical understanding, a house is not only a structure of brick, mortar and wood; it is a dwelling that will hold a family's daily life, its guests, its celebrations and its quiet hours. Because the first crossing of the threshold sets the tone for everything that follows, the family chooses a muhurat — a window of time that the panchang marks as suitable for this particular act.
The word muhurat refers to a measured span of time chosen for an undertaking. For Griha Pravesh, the classical texts weigh the lunar day (tithi), the nakshatra, the weekday and the solar month together, and set aside periods when the entry should not be made. The result is not a single auspicious instant but a set of qualifying windows, each of which a family can then refine with its own priest.
This page explains the rules behind the computed list. It does not decide for you. The dates shown on the page come from the panchang calculated for New Delhi; the reasoning below tells you what those dates mean and what they leave for personal judgement.
Each entry on the list is a day on which the day-level panchang passes every check applied here. That is a deliberately conservative filter: a date appears only if its weekday and month qualify, none of the excluded periods is running, and for at least 48 minutes both the nakshatra and the tithi are on the approved lists, within the hours from sunrise to sunset and outside Rahu kaal.
Read the list in this order:
The 48-minute minimum exists so that the entry, the havan and the small rituals around them can be completed without rushing the window's edge. A window shorter than that is not listed, even if the nakshatra and tithi are otherwise acceptable.
Two cautions follow from how the list is built. First, a date on the list is a day-level result; it says nothing about the lagna rising at your chosen hour. Second, the list is computed for New Delhi. Nakshatra and tithi boundaries shift with longitude, so families elsewhere in India and in the diaspora should treat the listed times as indicative and have the local panchang checked.
The classical framework used here can be grouped into four conditions.
Eight nakshatras are accepted for Griha Pravesh: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. These are the fixed (sthira) and soft (mridu) nakshatras traditionally associated with laying foundations and settling into a home.
Any tithi is acceptable except Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi — the Rikta tithis, so called because they are held to be empty or barren — and Amavasya. The remaining tithis, from Pratipada through Purnima, are permitted subject to the other conditions.
Only Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday qualify. The months named are Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Magha and Phalguna in the purnimanta reckoning. Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are the favoured months for this samskara.
No entry is advised during:
These exclusions reflect the broader principle that a beginning should not be made while the supporting luminaries are weakened or while the calendar is set aside for other observances. Traditions differ on some of these points — amanta and purnimanta reckonings name the months differently, and Smarta and Vaishnava practice do not always agree on Chaturmas boundaries. Where your family follows a particular convention, that convention should be preferred.
Sometimes the list offers nothing that fits a family's practical constraints — a possession date, a work transfer, a school term or a long journey may not align with the qualifying windows. In that case, the usual step is to speak with your family priest or a qualified jyotishi rather than to force a date.
It is worth being clear about what this list does and does not do. It checks the day-level panchang only. Personal factors — the birth charts involved, Tarabala and Chandrabala, the lagna rising at the chosen hour and family custom — are examined separately by your priest or jyotishi before the time is fixed. A date that appears here is a starting point for that conversation, not a substitute for it.
If a suitable window cannot be found, many families simply wait for the next qualifying period, or perform a modest entry and complete the fuller ceremony later. Custom on this varies widely, and your priest can advise on what is appropriate for your household.

From the computed panchang for New Delhi: a day is listed only if its weekday and month pass, none of these is running (Adhik (extra) lunar month; Pitru Paksha; Jupiter or Venus combust (asta); Kharmas (Sun in Dhanu or Meena); Chaturmas (Devshayani to Dev Uthani Ekadashi); Holashtak), and for at least 48 minutes both the nakshatra and the tithi are on the list above outside Rahu kaal.
Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.
No. The list checks the day-level panchang only. Personal factors (the birth charts involved, Tarabala and Chandrabala, the lagna at the chosen time and family custom) are checked by your priest or jyotishi before fixing the time.
