Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise; times are IST for New Delhi. Confirm the exact time for your city and family with your priest.

Why timing matters for this event

Mundan — also called Chudakarana or the first head-shaving — is a samskara, one of the traditional rites that mark a child's passage through life. In jyotish, the day and hour chosen for a samskara are treated as part of the rite itself, not as an afterthought. The classical texts set out which nakshatras, tithis, weekdays and months are considered suitable, and which periods should be set aside.

The purpose of a muhurat is not to promise any particular outcome. It is to place an important family occasion inside a window that the tradition regards as clean and well-supported, so that the ceremony is performed with attention rather than in haste. Many families also find that a fixed muhurat makes the practical arrangements — travel, priest, venue — easier to plan calmly.

Chudakarana is usually performed in the child's 1st, 3rd or 5th year. The child's own birth month is avoided. Customs on this point vary between families and regions, so this is best confirmed with your priest rather than decided from a list alone.

How to read the date list

The dates shown on this page are computed from the panchang for New Delhi. Each listed day has passed the day-level checks described below, and each carries a time window during which the ceremony may be held.

If you are reading this on a mobile screen, note the window carefully — some windows sit close to sunrise or sunset, and travel time to a temple or venue should be counted from the start of the window, not the middle of it.

Because the panchang is computed for New Delhi, families in other cities should expect small differences in the exact start and end of a window. For most of India the difference is minor, but for the diaspora it can matter. Your priest can recompute for your location.

Rules applied

A day is listed only when all of the following hold.

Nakshatra

One of: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Revati.

Tithi

Any tithi except the Rikta tithis — Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi — and except Amavasya.

Weekday

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

Month

Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha, Magha or Phalguna, reckoned in the purnimanta system. Traditions that reckon months in the amanta system will draw the boundaries differently; families who follow that reckoning should have their priest confirm the month.

Periods set aside

The ceremony is not held during:

These exclusions are the reason a month may contain several good nakshatras and yet produce no listed date at all.

What if no muhurat suits

It is common for a family to find that the listed windows fall on days that cannot be managed, or that a preferred month yields nothing because Chaturmas or another excluded period is running. This is not a sign of anything. It simply means the calendar and the family's circumstances are not aligned yet.

In that situation, families usually take one of a few routes. Some wait for the next qualifying month. Some ask their priest whether a different samskara date within the same year is workable. Some, for practical reasons, proceed on a day chosen by the family priest after examining the charts involved, since the priest can weigh factors this list does not.

What the list cannot do is substitute for that personal check. The day-level panchang is only one layer. The birth charts involved, Tarabala and Chandrabala, the lagna at the chosen time, and family custom are all examined by your priest or jyotishi before the time is fixed. Two families with the same listed date may reasonably end up with different final timings.

Where traditions differ — North and South, Smarta and Vaishnava, amanta and purnimanta — this page follows the conventions stated above and does not claim they are universal. Treat the list as a well-filtered shortlist, and let your priest make the final determination.

Questions

How are Mundan Muhurat dates calculated?

From the computed panchang for New Delhi: a day is listed only if its weekday and month pass, none of these is running (Adhik (extra) lunar month; Pitru Paksha; Jupiter or Venus combust (asta); Kharmas (Sun in Dhanu or Meena); Chaturmas (Devshayani to Dev Uthani Ekadashi); Holashtak), and for at least 48 minutes both the nakshatra and the tithi are on the list above outside Rahu kaal.

Which nakshatras are good for mundan?

Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Revati.

Is a date on this list enough on its own?

No. The list checks the day-level panchang only. Personal factors (the birth charts involved, Tarabala and Chandrabala, the lagna at the chosen time and family custom) are checked by your priest or jyotishi before fixing the time.
