Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise; times are IST for New Delhi. Confirm the exact time for your city and family with your priest.

Why timing matters for this event

In the jyotish tradition, a beginning is treated as a seed. The condition of the sky at the moment a venture starts is read as setting the tone for what follows. This is why classical texts give muhurat — a chosen window — for acts that mark a new phase of life and work. Opening a shop, an office, or a new enterprise is one such act.

The purpose of a muhurat is not to promise a result. It is to align an important step with a time that the tradition regards as clean and supportive, so the person begins with a settled mind and a clear intention. Many families also treat the muhurat as a moment of prayer, however brief, before the shutters are raised or the first entry is made in the books.

Because this page is about business openings specifically, the rules below are the classical ones applied to a new venture. They are not the same as the rules for a wedding, a griha pravesh, or a naming ceremony, and the lists should not be interchanged.

How to read the date list

Each entry on the Business Opening Muhurat list is a day on which the panchang satisfies every condition given below. The listing is computed for New Delhi; readers elsewhere in India and abroad should treat the dates as a starting point and confirm the local sunrise, sunset and Rahu kaal for their own city.

Read the list as a shortlist of days, not as a fixed appointment. The exact hour for the opening should be settled with your priest or jyotishi, who will look at the lagna at the chosen moment and at the personal charts involved.

Rules applied

The classical conditions used to build the list are set out here so that you can see what has and has not been checked.

Nakshatra

Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.

Tithi

Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi, in either paksha — that is, in both the waxing and the waning fortnight. The same set of tithis is given for business openings in the note on this event.

Weekday

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Month

Any month, with two exclusions: the muhurat is not taken during an Adhik (extra) lunar month, and it is not taken during Pitru Paksha.

Time window

The window must fall between sunrise and sunset, must lie outside Rahu kaal, and must last at least 48 minutes. Within that span, both the nakshatra and the tithi must be from the lists above.

Traditions differ on some of these points. North Indian and South Indian panchangs can use different month reckonings — amanta in the south and purnimanta in the north — so the same lunar month may be labelled differently in the two systems. Smarta and Vaishnava households also observe different ekadashi reckonings in some months. Where your family custom differs from the list, follow the custom and let your priest reconcile the two.

What if no muhurat suits

Sometimes the listed windows fall on days that do not work for you — a lease is not ready, stock has not arrived, or family members cannot travel. The tradition recognises this. A priest can look for an alternative window using the same nakshatra and tithi rules, or advise on a simpler observance, such as a brief prayer at the shop or office before regular work begins.

It is also acceptable to begin quietly and hold the formal opening later, when a suitable muhurat is available. What matters is that the step is taken with attention, not that a particular date is forced.

A date from this list is only a day-level check. It does not examine the birth charts of the people involved, their Tarabala and Chandrabala, the lagna at the chosen hour, or family custom. Those are personal factors, and they are properly checked by a qualified jyotishi or your family priest before the time is fixed. Nothing on this page promises a particular outcome; it sets out the classical rules so that you can use the dates with confidence and with guidance.

Questions

How are Business Opening Muhurat dates calculated?

From the computed panchang for New Delhi: a day is listed only if its weekday and month pass, none of these is running (Adhik (extra) lunar month; Pitru Paksha), and for at least 48 minutes both the nakshatra and the tithi are on the list above outside Rahu kaal.

Which nakshatras are good for business opening?

Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.

Is a date on this list enough on its own?

No. The list checks the day-level panchang only. Personal factors (the birth charts involved, Tarabala and Chandrabala, the lagna at the chosen time and family custom) are checked by your priest or jyotishi before fixing the time.
