Samagri list

A general list. Your pandit may add or leave out items for your tradition, so confirm it with them.

Significance and when it is done

Pradosh Vrat Puja, प्रदोष व्रत पूजा, is the worship of Shiva during Pradosh kaal — the twilight window around sunset. The vrat is observed on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi, and the puja is the evening act of worship that completes it. In Sanskrit the rite is called प्रदोषपूजनम्, and it sits in the wider category of vrat puja and udyapan.

The intention is simple and devotional: Shiva puja in the evening Pradosh kaal on Trayodashi. Families keep the day lightly, bathe and settle before the lamp is lit, and gather at home or at a shrine for the evening worship. Because Pradosh kaal is a window rather than a fixed hour, the exact timing is read from the panchang for your location; the page shows the muhurat from data rather than a fixed clock time.

Nothing here is predictive. The puja is a traditional observance, and its place in a family's life is decided by that family and its elders.

Who performs it and who should attend

A qualified pandit usually leads the vidhi, reciting the mantras and guiding each step. The person who has kept the vrat is the yajaman and sits closest to the kalash. Others in the household may attend, join the namaskaram, and take prasad.

If a pandit is not available locally, the puja can be done online: many pandits perform it by video call while a family member does the physical steps at home. In that arrangement, one person at home handles the lamp, the offerings and the kalash, and follows the pandit's instructions aloud for everyone present. Children and elders who cannot sit through the whole rite are welcome to join for the aarti and prasad.

Vidhi step by step (outline)

Traditions differ, so treat this as an outline rather than a script. Your pandit will follow the paddhati of your region and sampradaya.

Typical duration is about 1 h, depending on the tradition and how much is included. Havan is not part of this puja in the catalogue's listing.

Preparing the samagri and the space

Set aside a clean, quiet corner — a puja room or a space cleared for the evening. Keep everything within arm's reach before the puja begins so the flow is not broken. The samagri list is:

Wipe the kalash, fill it with water and a little Ganga jal, and keep the bel leaves and white flowers fresh. Arrange the diya and wicks so the lamp can be lit without hurry. If any item is unavailable, ask your pandit what may be substituted in your tradition.

Regional variations

Practice varies. In many North Indian homes the vrat follows the purnimanta reckoning of months, while in parts of South India and among Smarta families the amanta reckoning is used; the Trayodashi date can therefore fall on what looks like a different day. Some families observe a strict fast through the day, others take only water or fruit, and some keep a lighter vrat according to family custom. Vaishnava households may observe the day differently again. Rather than choosing one, follow the paddhati your family or pandit follows, and confirm the tithi from the panchang for your city.

After the puja: prasad, daan, dos and don'ts

After the aarti, the prasad — fruits and sweets offered as naivedya — is shared by everyone present. Daan, if your family does it, is given according to your capacity and custom; the pandit's dakshina is separate and is set by each pandit individually. Typical dakshina is £51–101 in the UK, $75–151 in the USA and ₹1,100–2,100 in India, excluding samagri and travel.

Keep the lamp and the space undisturbed until they are naturally spent, and avoid beginning anything new in the household until the puja is closed. Do not treat the observance as a transaction, and do not expect a fixed outcome from it. For questions about your own chart, vrat dates or personal practice, consult a qualified jyotishi or your family pandit.
