Shani Sade Sati Shanti Puja

Shani Sade Sati Shanti Puja (शनि साढ़ेसाती शांति पूजा) belongs to the category of Graha shanti & dosha observances. It is performed for Shani, with Hanuman also honoured, and is traditionally taken up during Saturn's 7½-year transit over the Moon sign. The usual duration is about 2 hours, and a havan is included. The puja can also be arranged online, with a family member carrying out the physical steps at home.

Significance and when it is done

Sade Sati refers to the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn moves over the Moon sign of a person's birth chart. Families often choose this shanti puja at the beginning of that period, or at a point within it when they wish to observe a formal prayer. The puja is a way of acknowledging Shani's place in the graha system and of asking for steadiness and peace of mind.

Because the timing of Sade Sati depends on each individual chart, the decision to hold the puja is best confirmed with a qualified jyotishi who can read the chart. This page describes the ritual itself; it does not predict outcomes for any person, and no result — in health, money, marriage or otherwise — is promised or feared.

Who performs it and who should attend

A pandit conducts the puja, reciting the mantras and guiding the family through the steps. In many households the person whose chart shows Sade Sati sits closest to the mandap; spouse, parents and children commonly attend and join in the aarti. If the puja is done online, a family member at home performs the physical steps — lighting the diya, offering items, and so on — while the pandit leads by video call.

Vidhi step by step (outline)

Exact wording and order vary by region and family tradition. A common outline runs as follows:

The full sequence usually takes about two hours, depending on the tradition and how much is included.

Preparing the samagri and the space

Samagri can be arranged in advance so that the pandit can begin without delay. The list below is the one used for this puja:

For the space: a clean, quiet corner with room for the mandap and havan kund, good ventilation for the havan, and a low table or chowki. If the puja is online, keep the camera steady, place the samagri within reach, and test the connection beforehand.

Regional variations

Practice differs across India and the diaspora. In some North Indian households the puja is timed to the purnimanta month, while others follow the amanta reckoning; Smarta and Vaishnava families may order the opening prayers differently; in parts of South India, Shani worship is often closely linked with Hanuman and with the recitation of specific stotras. Some families keep the puja brief and centre it on the havan; others include a longer recitation. Where traditions differ, the family's own pandit is the best guide.

After the puja: prasad, daan, dos and don'ts

Once the aarti is complete, prasad is distributed — naivedya sweets and fruit, and in many homes a portion of the havan remains. Daan is a common part of the observance: families may give til, mustard oil, black cloth or iron to a pandit or to someone in need, according to their means and tradition. The black cloth and blue flowers used in the puja are often given away rather than kept.

Practical dos: keep the mandap area clean, follow the pandit's instructions on offerings, and treat the havan fire with care. Don'ts: avoid rushing the sankalp, and avoid treating the puja as a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice. For anything specific to a personal chart, consult a qualified jyotishi. Dakshina is set by each pandit; typical ranges are shown separately on this page, along with any available muhurat.
