Significance and when it is done

Satyanarayan Puja (सत्यनारायण पूजा), known in Sanskrit as श्रीसत्यनारायणव्रतपूजा, belongs to the category of devotional pujas, paths and homas. The deity is Vishnu, worshipped here as Satyanarayan. The puja centres on the Satyanarayan katha and is observed on Purnima or for any happy occasion — a new home, a wedding, a birth, a business opening, or simply as a family thanksgiving.

Because the observance is tied to gratitude and truthfulness rather than to a single life problem, families often return to it year after year. It is a vrat and a puja together: a vow kept with attention, and a worship offered with the katha recited aloud.

Who performs it and who should attend

A pandit conducts the puja and recites the katha. The family sits with the pandit, joins in the mantras, and takes part in the offerings. In many households the eldest couple or the head of the family performs the main sankalp, while everyone present participates in the aarti and the prasad.

There is no fixed rule that only certain people may attend. Children, elders and guests are commonly present, since the occasion is a family one. If someone in the household is unwell or away, that is a practical matter for the family to decide, not a ritual bar.

Online participation is possible. Many pandits perform the puja by video call while a family member does the physical steps at home — lighting the diya, offering the items, and arranging the prasad.

Vidhi step by step (outline)

Traditions differ, so the sequence below is an outline rather than a fixed script. Your pandit will follow the order of their own parampara.

The typical duration is about 2 h, depending on the tradition and how much is included. There is no havan in this puja.

Preparing the samagri and the space

Set up a clean space, ideally where the family can sit together facing east or north. A low table or a wooden chowki works well. Keep the samagri gathered in one place so the pandit can move through the vidhi without interruption.

Many families keep a few items in reserve — extra wicks, extra flowers, a spare coconut — since the katha and aarti take time. If you are arranging the puja for the first time, ask the pandit beforehand whether they prefer to bring any of the samagri themselves.

Regional variations

The Satyanarayan vrat is observed across India and in the diaspora, and the details vary. In some regions the katha is read in five chapters, in others fewer; the prasad may be sheera, or a mixture of rava, sugar and banana. North Indian and South Indian households often differ in the arrangement of the kalash and the order of offerings. Smarta and Vaishnava families may follow slightly different mantras. None of these variations is a departure from the puja — they are the puja as it lives in different homes. Follow your family's tradition, or ask your pandit to guide you.

After the puja: prasad, daan, dos and don'ts

The puja closes with aarti and the distribution of prasad. The sheera prasad is shared with everyone present, and often sent to neighbours and relatives who could not attend. Daan, if the family wishes, is given to the pandit and to those in need; the form and amount are a personal decision.

Typical dakshina is £101–201 in the UK, $151–301 in the USA and ₹2,100–5,100 in India, excluding samagri and travel. Each pandit sets their own fee. For personal chart-based questions, consult a qualified jyotishi.
