Samagri list

A general list. Your pandit may add or leave out items for your tradition, so confirm it with them.

Significance and when it is done

Ayushya Homam (आयुष्य होम), also written in Sanskrit as आयुष्यहोमः, is a samskara — one of the life rites — performed as a birthday homa. Its purpose is to pray for long life and health, and it is traditionally done on the birth nakshatra, the lunar mansion in which the person was born.

The deities invoked are Ayur Devata and Mrityunjaya. Because this is a havan, it includes a sacred fire and offerings into it. Families often arrange it on a milestone birthday, or simply as a yearly observance for a family member.

Ayushya Homam is a rite of prayer and gratitude, not a medical treatment. It is not a substitute for care from a qualified doctor, and it makes no promise about any particular outcome.

Who performs it and who should attend

A qualified pandit conducts the homa. The person whose birthday it is — or a family member standing in for them — sits as the yajamana and makes the offerings. Close family usually attend, and in many households the elder members of the family are seated nearest the havan kund.

If the person is not present, a family member can perform the physical steps on their behalf. This is also how the puja works when it is done online: the pandit performs it by video call while a family member carries out the physical steps at home.

For questions about your own chart — which nakshatra applies, or how the rite fits your circumstances — consult a qualified jyotishi.

Vidhi step by step (outline)

The exact sequence varies by tradition and by region. A common outline runs as follows:

Typical duration is about 2 h, depending on the tradition and how much is included.

Preparing the samagri and the space

Assemble the samagri in advance so the pandit can begin without interruption. The list below is the usual one for this homa:

Choose a clean, well-ventilated space for the havan kund, with enough room for those seated around it. Keep the samagri within reach of the yajamana, and keep a tray ready for prasad and for any daan.

Regional variations

Traditions differ, and families should follow the custom of their own lineage. North Indian and South Indian households often differ in the mantras recited and in the order of some steps. Smarta and Vaishnava traditions may differ in the invocation and in which deities receive offerings. Communities that follow the amanta calendar and those that follow the purnimanta calendar reckon the month differently, which can affect the day chosen. Rather than picking one form, it is best to ask your pandit which practice your family follows.

After the puja: prasad, daan, dos and don'ts

When the homa concludes, the prasad is shared among those present. Some families also give daan, following their own custom and the guidance of the pandit.

Fees are set by each pandit individually. Typical dakshina is £101–201 in the UK, $151–301 in the USA and ₹2,100–5,100 in India, excluding samagri and travel. Muhurat dates and current fees are shown on the page from data.
