Significance and when it is done

Sudarshan Homa (सुदर्शन होम; Sanskrit सुदर्शनहोमः) is a devotional puja and havan offered to Vishnu in his form as Sudarshan, the divine discus. It belongs to the category of devotional pujas, paths and homas, and its stated purpose is protection from negativity and illness. Families often plan it at a turning point — a new home, a period of difficulty, or simply a wish to place the household under Vishnu's care. The homa is a rite of asking, not a transaction; results are left to grace.

Because Sudarshan is invoked as a protective presence, the homa is usually arranged as a complete ritual rather than a short prayer. It is a havan, so a sacred fire is central. Typical duration is about 3 h, though this depends on the tradition followed and how much of the sequence is included. For anyone considering a personal muhurat or a reading of their own chart, it is best to consult a qualified jyotishi rather than rely on general guidance.

Who performs it and who should attend

A qualified pandit performs the homa, reciting the mantras and making the ahutis. Family members may sit nearby, join in the namaskar and aarti, and take part in the simpler steps. Children and elders are welcome; what matters is a clean space, quiet attention and a settled intention.

Sudarshan Homa can also be done online. In that case, many pandits perform it by video call while a family member does the physical steps at home — arranging the kalash, lighting the diya, and offering into the havan kund as directed. The pandit guides the sequence; the household supplies the hands.

Vidhi step by step (outline)

Exact wording and order vary by region and sampradaya. A common outline runs as follows:

Ask the pandit in advance which steps will be included, since that is the main reason the timing shifts.

Preparing the samagri and the space

The samagri list for Sudarshan Homa is long, so it helps to gather it a day or two early. The usual items are:

Ghee appears twice in the list — once for lamps and once for the ahutis — so keep enough on hand. Choose a clean, ventilated space for the havan kund, with room for the family to sit. Keep the area free of clutter and set aside a plate for prasad. If the homa is being done online, arrange the same items at home and keep the phone or screen steady and within view of the kund.

Regional variations

Traditions differ, and it is fine to follow the one your family or pandit knows. North Indian households may follow a purnimanta reckoning for related observances, while many in the South and West use amanta; Smarta and Vaishnava lineages also vary in which mantras are recited and how long the havan runs. Some families include a Vishnu Sahasranama path before the fire rite, others go straight to the ahutis. Rather than choosing one as correct, confirm the version your pandit follows.

After the puja: prasad, daan, dos and don'ts

After the purnahuti and aarti, prasad is distributed — the naivedya sweets and fruits, and the Tulsi and flowers from the archana. Daan, if the family wishes, is given to the pandit or to a temple or cause of one's choice. The usual courtesies apply: keep the day calm, avoid arguments, and treat the remaining samagri with respect.

Dakshina is set by each pandit individually; the page above shows the current range for the UK, USA and India, excluding samagri and travel. Fees and muhurat dates are displayed from live data, so check the page for the latest figures. No outcome — health, money, marriage or legal — is promised or feared here; the homa is an act of devotion and protection, offered with sincerity.
