Samagri list

A general list. Your pandit may add or leave out items for your tradition, so confirm it with them.

Significance and when it is done

Vivah Sanskar (विवाह संस्कार), also called विवाहः in Sanskrit, belongs to the category of Samskaras — the life rites that mark the stages of a Hindu life. It is the Hindu wedding: kanyadaan, panigrahan, saptapadi and the pheras taken around the sacred fire. The deities invoked are Agni, Lakshmi-Narayan and Ganesha. Agni carries the offerings; Lakshmi-Narayan are the divine pair held before the couple; Ganesha is invoked at the start so the rite proceeds without obstruction.

The rite is performed at the time of marriage, once in a couple's life. It is a havan — a fire rite — and it is in person only. A family plans it well in advance, because it involves the joining of two households, not only two individuals. The brief note here is descriptive: it explains what the tradition contains, not what any particular couple should expect from it.

Who performs it and who should attend

A qualified pandit performs the Vivah Sanskar, reciting the mantras and guiding the couple through each step. The couple sits at the centre of the rite. The bride's father, or the person giving the kanya in his place, has a defined role in the kanyadaan. Parents, elders and close family from both sides attend; the mandap and the sacred fire are the focus of the gathering.

Because the rite is havan-based and in person only, everyone takes part in the same place, around the same fire. The pandit's role is to keep the sequence correct and to explain each step as it comes, so the family can follow without confusion.

Vidhi step by step (outline)

Traditions differ, and the outline below is general rather than fixed. In practice the pandit adapts the order to the family's region and lineage.

Typical duration is about 5 hours, depending on the tradition and how much is included. The pandit decides the exact sequence with the family beforehand.

Preparing the samagri and the space

The samagri list for Vivah Sanskar is long, and it is worth gathering it in one place a day or two before. The essentials include Roli (kumkum), Haldi, Akshat (unbroken rice), Moli (sacred thread), Supari, Paan leaves, Coconut, Ghee, Diya and cotton wicks, Camphor, Incense sticks, Flowers and garland, Fruits, Sweets for naivedya and Ganga jal.

For the havan and the mandap, the list continues: Kalash, Havan kund, Mango wood (samidha), Havan samagri, Ghee for ahuti, Til (sesame), Jau (barley), Mandap items, Varmala, Mangalsutra, Sindoor, Ghatbandhan cloth, Puffed rice (lajja) and a Grinding stone (ashma).

Set up the mandap and the havan kund so that the couple, the pandit and the family can all sit comfortably around the fire. Keep the samagri in labelled trays where possible; on the day itself this saves time and keeps the sequence moving.

Regional variations

Vivah Sanskar is observed across India and in the diaspora, and the details vary. North Indian and South Indian traditions order some steps differently, and the Smarta and Vaishnava streams each have their own conventions. The amanta and purnimanta reckonings of the lunar month also affect how the muhurat is read. Where traditions differ, it is best to follow the family's own lineage and the pandit who will perform the rite, rather than a single general rule. For personal charts, consult a qualified jyotishi.

After the puja: prasad, daan, dos and don'ts

After the rite, prasad is distributed — the sweets and fruits offered as naivedya are shared among those present. Daan, in the form of dakshina to the pandit and offerings to those who helped, is customary and is arranged by the family.

A few practical points. Choose the date from the computed muhurat list for your city; Vivah Sanskar needs a muhurat. Confirm the samagri list with the pandit in advance, since the full list above is a general one. The rite is in person only, so plan for everyone to be present at the same place and time. Dakshina varies by pandit and by country, and each pandit sets their own fee; it is usually quoted excluding samagri and travel. Ask about both when you book, so there are no surprises on the day.

Treat the day as a family occasion first and a ritual second — the pandit will guide the sequence, and the family's role is to be present, attentive and unhurried.
