Significance

Utpanna Ekadashi falls on Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi in the purnimanta calendar. Readers who follow the amanta reckoning will know this tithi as Kartik Krishna Ekadashi. The difference is one of month-naming convention rather than of the tithi itself, and both traditions observe the same day.

The deity of this vrat is Vishnu. Among the Ekadashis of the year, Utpanna holds a particular place because it is remembered as the occasion on which the Ekadashi tithi itself came into being — the name Utpanna means "born" or "manifest." For that reason it is often treated as the first Ekadashi of the annual cycle of Ekadashi vrats, and many households that keep Ekadashi through the year begin or renew their observance here.

Observance is a matter of personal discipline and family custom. It is not a remedy, and it is not a transaction. The fast is kept as an act of devotion to Vishnu, and the benefit traditionally described is of that devotional kind. Nothing here should be read as a promise of any particular outcome in a person's life.

Vrat vidhi step by step

Customs vary by region, by family and between Smarta and Vaishnava practice. What follows is the common shape of the observance; where your own family or sampradaya has a settled way of doing it, that takes precedence.

Those who are unwell, pregnant, very young, elderly, or on medication should not undertake a grain fast without advice from their doctor. In many families such persons keep a partial vrat — avoiding grains but eating permitted foods — and this is treated as a valid observance.

What to eat and avoid

The single firm rule in the brief is this: fast from grains. Everything else is custom.

If you are observing for the first time, a simple and honest approach is better than an elaborate one you cannot sustain. A fruit-and-milk fast kept steadily is a complete observance.

Parana rules

Parana is the breaking of the fast. For Utpanna Ekadashi the rule given is straightforward: parana the next morning, after sunrise, within Dwadashi.

Two things follow from this. First, the fast is not broken at midnight or before sunrise — it is broken the following morning. Second, there is a window: Dwadashi, the tithi that follows Ekadashi. The parana should fall inside that window, after sunrise. Because the tithi boundaries shift from year to year, the exact parana window differs each time; the panchang for the year gives the timings, and those are shown on this page.

If you have missed the window for some reason, do not treat it as a failure. Break your fast when you are able, and note the correct timing for next year. The vrat is kept in good faith, not under penalty.

Katha in brief

The katha of Utpanna Ekadashi is the account of how the Ekadashi tithi came to be. In brief: a demon of great strength troubled the gods, and from Vishnu's own being the goddess Ekadashi arose and overcame him. Because she was born — utpanna — from the Lord on this day, the tithi takes her name, and the vrat is kept in her honour and in Vishnu's.

Different regions tell the story with different details and different names for the figures involved. The telling varies; the point does not. The day is observed in devotion to Vishnu, and the katha is recited on the Ekadashi itself, often in the evening or during the night vigil.

Dates for this year and the next two, along with the parana window, are computed from the panchang and listed on this page. For questions about your own chart and how the vrat fits your practice, consult a qualified jyotishi.
