Significance
Masik Durgashtami is the monthly observance of Durga, kept on Shukla Ashtami — the eighth tithi of the waxing fortnight — in each lunar month. Where the great Navratri festivals cluster the worship of the Goddess into nine nights twice a year, Masik Durgashtami carries the same devotion across the whole year, one Ashtami at a time. The name itself says as much: masik means monthly, and the tithi is Ashtami.
For many households this is a quiet, repeating anchor rather than a large public occasion. The deity is Durga, and the day is understood as one on which her presence is especially remembered and honoured. Because the tithi recurs every month, it suits readers who want a steady practice rather than a once-a-year festival — a fixed point in the panchang that returns whether or not a major festival is near.
Observance is not uniform. Some keep a full fast, some take only water or fruit, and some simply perform puja without fasting at all. Regional and family traditions differ, and both amanta and purnimanta reckonings of the lunar month are in use across India, so the exact civil date of a given Ashtami can appear differently depending on the calendar followed. Readers are encouraged to confirm against their own local panchang or family custom.
Vrat vidhi step by step
The vidhi below is a general outline drawn from common practice. It is descriptive, not prescriptive — adapt it to what your family or your guru has taught.
- Rise early and bathe. Begin the day clean and settled, before the usual demands of the household take over.
- Set a sankalpa. State, in your own words, that you are keeping this vrat for this Ashtami. A simple resolve is enough.
- Perform Durga puja. Offer flowers, light, incense and naivedya before an image or murti of Durga, or before a kalash if that is your tradition.
- Recite or listen to the katha. The story of the Ashtami is read or heard as part of the puja.
- Do kanya bhoj. Offer food and respect to young girls, who are honoured as forms of the Goddess. This is one of the two observances named in the brief for this vrat.
- Keep the fast according to your capacity. Full fast, partial fast or no fast — the choice is yours and is best made with your own circumstances in view.
- Break the fast at parana. Close the vrat at the proper time, as described below.
If you are new to the vrat, start with the puja and kanya bhoj and let the fasting question come later. Consistency over months is generally valued more than severity on any single day.
What to eat and avoid
Food rules for Masik Durgashtami vary widely by region and family, so treat the following as the common pattern rather than a single rule.
- Commonly taken: fruit, milk, curd, nuts, sabudana, singhara, and other fasting foods; some take a single simple meal.
- Commonly avoided on the vrat day: grains and cereals, onion and garlic, and non-vegetarian food. Many also avoid alcohol.
- Kanya bhoj: the food offered to the girls is prepared as prasad and is part of the observance itself.
Health and medical considerations are personal. If you are pregnant, unwell, on medication, or unsure whether fasting suits you, decide with a qualified doctor and follow their advice — the vrat does not require anyone to harm their health.
Parana rules
Parana is the act of closing the fast. For Masik Durgashtami it is done after the puja and the kanya bhoj are complete, on the same Ashtami tithi where possible. The precise window depends on your local panchang, so check the tithi timings for your city rather than relying on a general rule.
Where the tithi is short or overlaps with other observances, families differ on whether parana is taken earlier or the fast is carried slightly longer. Both approaches are found in practice. If you keep a full fast and the window is narrow, a light parana is customary. When in doubt, follow the practice of your household or consult a qualified jyotishi for guidance on your own chart and circumstances.
Katha in brief
The katha read on Masik Durgashtami centres on Durga and her power, and on the devotee's resolve to remember her. The Ashtami tithi is closely associated with the Goddess in the Devi tradition, and the monthly vrat keeps that association alive between the larger Navratri observances.
Different regions and communities tell the story with their own emphases, and some families read from a particular text handed down to them. There is no single version that overrides the others; the telling you grew up with is the one to keep. What remains constant is the shape of the day — puja, katha, kanya bhoj, and a fast closed at parana.
Dates for this year and the next two are computed from the panchang and listed on this page. For anything specific to your own chart or your family's tradition, a qualified jyotishi is the right person to ask.
