Significance
Skanda Shashti is a monthly vrat kept on Shukla Shashthi — the sixth day of the bright fortnight. Its deity is Kartikeya, known across India by many names: Skanda, Murugan, Subrahmanya, Kumara. In the Tamil tradition he is Murugan, and the vrat is observed with particular care in homes and temples that hold him as the family deity.
The vrat belongs to the family of Shashti observances tied to the sixth tithi. Because it follows the lunar month rather than a single annual date, it returns every month, which is why readers often plan it month by month rather than once a year. The annual Skanda Shashti in the Tamil month of Aippasi carries its own larger observance; the monthly vrat described here is the recurring one.
What the day asks of the observer is simple and consistent: fast, Murugan puja. There is no elaborate requirement beyond that in the brief. Devotees keep it for a range of personal reasons — as a discipline, as gratitude, as a vow undertaken for a fixed period. Jyotish readers sometimes treat the day as supportive for matters connected with Kartikeya, but any reading of a personal chart should be taken to a qualified jyotishi rather than settled from a general page.
Vrat vidhi step by step
The vidhi below reflects the common shape of the observance. Regional and family practice varies, and where it does, follow your own tradition or your family's customary method.
- Begin with sankalpa. On the morning of Shukla Shashthi, bathe, take a clean seat facing east or north, and state your intention to keep the vrat. If you are keeping it as a fixed vow, mention the period you have undertaken.
- Set up the puja. A simple arrangement is enough: a clean space, a lamp, water, and an image or yantra of Kartikeya. Many households keep a vel (spear) as the aniconic form of Murugan.
- Offer the usual upacharas. Light the lamp, offer water, incense, flowers, and a fruit or simple naivedya. Recite the names of Kartikeya or the Skanda Shashti katha if it is part of your family practice.
- Keep the fast through the day. The fast may be complete (no food) or partial (one meal, or fruit and milk only). Choose the form you can sustain and hold to it consistently.
- Evening puja. Repeat the lamp and offerings in the evening. Many observers sing or listen to Murugan hymns at this point.
- Close the vrat. Break the fast the following morning after the puja, or at the parana time given for that month on this page.
If you are new to the vrat, a partial fast kept steadily is generally preferred over an ambitious fast broken midway. The brief does not prescribe one form over another.
What to eat and avoid
Food rules for Skanda Shashti follow the ordinary pattern of Hindu vrat days, with local variation.
- Commonly taken: milk, curd, fruit, sabudana, rajgira, singhara, makhana, and other vrat-friendly grains and flours. Sendha namak (rock salt) is usual in many households.
- Commonly avoided: regular grains and pulses, onion and garlic, and non-vegetarian food. Some observers also avoid alcohol and tobacco on the day.
- Regional difference: South Indian practice often keeps the day lighter — fruit and milk, or a single simple meal — while North Indian households may permit one full vrat meal. Either is accepted within its own tradition.
If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or are on medication, the fast should be adjusted, and you should speak to your doctor rather than to an astrologer. This page makes no health claims.
Parana rules
Parana is the breaking of the fast. For Skanda Shashti, the general rule is to break it after the puja is complete — typically the next morning, once Shashthi has passed. The parana time shown for each month on this page is calculated from the panchang for that month; use the time listed rather than a fixed clock hour, since the tithi shifts month to month.
Two practical points:
- Break the fast with something light. A heavy first meal after a full-day fast is uncomfortable for most people.
- If you are travelling or unwell and cannot hold the fast to the parana time, break it when you must. The observance is kept in good faith, and traditions allow for this.
Katha in brief
Skanda Shashti is associated with Kartikeya's birth and his role as commander of the divine forces. The brief for this page records only the essentials: the tithi is Shukla Shashthi, the deity is Kartikeya, and the observance is a fast with Murugan puja. The fuller katha is told in the Skanda Purana and in regional Tamil accounts, and the version recited at home often differs from the printed one. If your family recites a particular katha on this day, that is the one to keep.
