Budh Beej Mantra
The Budh Beej Mantra is a Sanskrit seed mantra addressed to Budh, the planet Mercury. It belongs to the family of Navagraha beej mantras — the short, seed-syllable invocations used for each of the nine grahas. "Beej" means seed: these mantras are compact, built around concentrated sound syllables rather than long descriptive verses.
In the mantra, Budh is addressed as Budha, and the closing phrase is a namaskaram — a salutation. The mantra is chanted on Wednesdays, traditionally with a count of 108 repetitions daily, or 9,000 repetitions for the full graha japa.
Meaning
The mantra as given in the tradition is:
ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः
oṁ brāṁ brīṁ brauṁ saḥ budhāya namaḥ
The meaning is straightforward: Om brāṁ brīṁ brauṁ saḥ are the seed syllables, and the mantra is a salutation to Budha (Mercury). The four syllables brāṁ, brīṁ, brauṁ and saḥ are the beej — sound-seeds rather than ordinary words with dictionary meanings. In the Navagraha beej system, each graha has its own set of seed syllables, and these four are the ones assigned to Budh. The mantra opens with oṁ and closes with namaḥ, the standard salutation.
Because the seed syllables are not translatable in the way that a sentence is, the meaning of the mantra rests on the salutation itself: it is an address to Budha, offered with respect. Different lineages may explain the inner significance of the seed syllables in their own way; the brief text above is the form common to the Navagraha beej mantra tradition.
Benefits
In jyotish practice, the Navagraha beej mantras are recited as a form of upasana — devotional attention — toward a particular graha. The Budh Beej Mantra is the one associated with Budh. Devotees who follow this practice describe it as a way of keeping Budh in mind on its day, Wednesday, and of steadying the mind through repetition.
It is worth saying plainly: this is a traditional devotional practice, not a remedy with promised results. The mantra is not a substitute for guidance about your own chart. If you want to understand how Budh is placed in your horoscope and what that placement means for you personally, the appropriate step is to consult a qualified jyotishi. A mantra page can describe the practice; it cannot read your chart.
How to chant (count, time, posture)
The traditional instructions are simple and consistent across most accounts:
- Count: 108 repetitions daily. For the full graha japa, 9,000 repetitions.
- When: Wednesdays.
- Mala: a 108-bead mala, of rudraksha or tulsi. One full mala equals 108 repetitions.
- Posture and direction: seated, facing east or north.
- Preparation: after bathing.
In practice, many people begin with a single mala on Wednesdays and keep that rhythm. The 9,000 count belongs to the fuller graha japa, which is usually undertaken as a sustained practice rather than a single sitting. If you are unsure how to structure that, ask someone trained in the tradition rather than guessing at the count.
Traditions differ on details — North and South Indian practice, and Smarta and Vaishnava households, do not always agree on preparatory rules, direction, or which mala is preferred. Where customs vary, follow the convention of your own family or teacher. The brief here gives the common form; it does not override a living lineage.
Who should chant
The Budh Beej Mantra is open to anyone who wishes to take up the practice with respect — there is no requirement that you already know jyotish, and no requirement that Budh be prominent in your chart. Some people come to it because a jyotishi has suggested attention to Budh; others simply keep Wednesday as a day of recitation.
Two cautions are worth keeping. First, this is a devotional practice, and the results it is said to bring are described in the tradition in general terms — nothing here should be read as a promise about health, money, marriage or any legal matter. Second, if you are reciting for a specific concern in your life, the mantra is best paired with proper guidance. A qualified jyotishi can look at your chart and advise whether, and how, this practice fits.
