Shani Mantra
The Shani Mantra is a Beej (seed) mantra addressed to Shani (Saturn), the graha associated with slowness, discipline and time. Its source is the Shani mantra (Navagraha tradition), and it is composed in Sanskrit. In jyotish practice it is recited as part of the wider Navagraha tradition of propitiating the nine grahas.
Meaning
The mantra reads:
ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः
oṁ śaṁ śanaiścarāya namaḥ
Its meaning is given as: Om, śaṁ (Shani’s seed syllable), salutation to Shanaishchara, the slow-moving one.
Three elements make up the line. Oṁ is the sacred syllable that opens the mantra. Śaṁ is Shani’s seed syllable — the beej — which gives this mantra its character as a seed mantra rather than a longer descriptive verse. Śanaiścarāya namaḥ is the salutation, addressed to Shanaishchara, the name that carries the sense of one who moves slowly. The mantra is therefore both an address and an act of respect: it names the graha, offers the seed syllable, and bows.
Benefits
In the Navagraha tradition, mantras such as this one are recited as a form of upasana — steady, respectful attention to a graha. The tradition treats the recitation as a devotional and disciplinary practice, not as a transaction. It is not a promise of a particular result, and it is not a substitute for the guidance of a qualified jyotishi when a personal chart is being read.
What the practice offers, in plain terms, is structure: a fixed text, a fixed count, a fixed day. Many readers find that this regularity is itself the point. For questions about how Shani is placed in an individual chart, and what that placement means, a qualified jyotishi should be consulted.
How to chant (count, time, posture)
The brief gives the following method:
- Japa count: 108 daily; 23,000 for the full graha japa.
- When: Saturdays, especially at sunset; also Shani Jayanti.
- How: On a 108-bead mala (rudraksha or tulsi), seated facing east or north after bathing; one mala = 108 repetitions.
- Language: Sanskrit.
One full mala therefore equals 108 repetitions, which matches the daily count. The full graha japa of 23,000 is a larger undertaking, traditionally spread over a period of practice rather than completed in a single sitting.
Posture and direction are given as seated, facing east or north, after bathing. The mala may be of rudraksha or tulsi. Traditions differ on small details of preparation and on which mala is preferred; where customs vary, the practice followed in one’s own family or lineage is generally the one to keep.
Shani Jayanti is named in the brief as a day for this recitation. Dates for Shani Jayanti follow the lunar calendar and vary by region and by the amanta or purnimanta system used; readers should check the panchangam followed in their own tradition rather than assume a single date.
Who should chant
The mantra is given in the Navagraha tradition and is not restricted by the brief to any one group. It is a Sanskrit mantra addressed to Shani, and it may be recited by anyone who wishes to take up the practice with respect for the tradition.
Those who already observe Saturday as a day of Shani-related practice, or who wish to begin a steady daily japa of 108 repetitions, will find the instructions above sufficient to start. Because the full graha japa of 23,000 is a larger commitment, it is often taken up under the guidance of a teacher or a qualified jyotishi rather than begun casually.
For personal chart questions — how Shani is placed, what the placement signifies, whether a specific remedy suits a specific chart — consult a qualified jyotishi. This page describes the mantra and its traditional method of recitation; it does not read charts and does not predict outcomes for any individual.
