Chaitra Navratri dates 2026
- Chaitra Navratri
- Thursday, 19 March 2026Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (kshaya tithi)
Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and story
Chaitra Navratri is observed on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada through Navami — the first nine lunar days of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra. It is also called the spring Navratri, and it falls at the turn of the year in several regional reckonings, which is part of why it carries the weight it does.
The nine nights are dedicated to Durga. The observance is pan-India: the same nine tithis are kept from the Himalaya to the far south, though the forms of worship, the names given to the nine nights, and the days chosen for particular rites differ from region to region.
Because Chaitra Shukla Pratipada opens the bright fortnight of the first month, many households treat it as a natural beginning — a time for a fresh resolve, a new account book, or the start of a study term. The nine days are read as a single arc rather than nine separate festivals: a period set aside for discipline, recitation and restraint before the heat of summer.
How the date is fixed
Chaitra Navratri is not tied to a fixed Gregorian date. It is fixed by the panchang: the festival runs from Chaitra Shukla Pratipada to Chaitra Shukla Navami, and the Gregorian dates for a given year are computed from the tithi sequence and listed on this page.
Two things commonly cause the date to shift by a day between places or between printed calendars.
- Place. The tithi is reckoned for a given location and its sunrise. A city further east may already be in the next tithi when a city further west is not, so the opening day can differ by one day.
- Calendar system. Amanta and purnimanta reckonings count the lunar month from different points. The same tithi can therefore be labelled with a different month name in the two systems, and the listed festival day can appear to move.
The dates given on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. If you follow a different place or a different ayanamsha, your local panchang is the authority for your household.
Puja vidhi
There is no single vidhi for Chaitra Navratri; what follows is the common shape of the observance across most regions, and families will vary in detail.
- Ghatasthapana. The nine days are usually opened by installing a kalash, often with barley or other seeds sown in soil, which sprout over the nine days. The day and muhurat for this are taken from the local panchang.
- Daily worship. Durga is worshipped each day, with a lamp kept lit and offerings made according to family custom. Many households read a fixed portion of a text each day — the Durga Saptashati, or a regional equivalent — so that the full recitation completes by Navami.
- Fasting. Fasts are common, but their form is a matter of family practice. Some keep a full fast, some take one meal, some only avoid grain. Nothing here is a health instruction; if you have a medical condition, follow your physician rather than any general rule.
- Kanya pujan. On Ashtami or Navami, many households honour young girls as forms of the goddess, offer them food and give them gifts. The day chosen — Ashtami or Navami — is a regional and family preference.
- Closing. The kalash is visarjan-ed and the sprouts are taken out, often shared among family. In several regions the same day is also observed as Rama Navami, which falls on Chaitra Shukla Navami.
For the correct muhurat in your city, consult your local panchang or a qualified jyotishi. Personal charts are read individually, not from a general page.
Regional variations
The nine nights are shared; the names and the emphasis are not.
- North India. The nine days are commonly called Navratri and read as a single Durga observance, closing with Kanya pujan and, in many places, Rama Navami.
- Gujarat. The same tithis are observed with garba and dandiya raas through the nights, and the ninth night is kept as a distinct celebration.
- Maharashtra. The period is also kept as Gudi Padwa on Pratipada, with the gudi raised outside the home, and the nine days continue as Navratri.
- South India. The spring nine nights are observed with koluvu or golu displays of dolls in many homes, and with daily recitation and music; the naming and the sequence of days differ from the northern pattern.
- Smarta and Vaishnava. Smarta households emphasise Durga through the nine days; Vaishnava households may give more weight to Rama Navami at the close. Both are observed, and neither is the "correct" one.
What to avoid
A few cautions, stated plainly.
- Do not treat any general page as a personal reading. Chaitra Navratri is a shared observance. What it means for an individual chart is a separate question, and one for a qualified jyotishi.
- Do not fix the date from memory. Because the tithi moves with place and calendar system, check your local panchang before setting the day for Ghatasthapana or for the closing rite.
- Do not let fasting become a health risk. Fasts are a tradition, not a prescription. If you are pregnant, unwell, on medication, or very young, follow medical advice.
- Do not compare regional forms as better or worse. The differences between amanta and purnimanta, or between Smarta and Vaishnava practice, are longstanding and legitimate. Follow your own family and local tradition.
