- Vasant Panchami
- Friday, 23 January 2026Magha Shukla Panchami (sunrise)
Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and story
Vasant Panchami (वसंत पंचमी) falls on Magha Shukla Panchami — the fifth tithi of the waxing fortnight of Magha. The name joins Vasant, the spring season, with Panchami, the fifth lunar day. The festival marks the turn of the year toward spring and is kept in honour of Saraswati, the goddess associated with learning, speech, music and the arts.
Because the day belongs to Saraswati, it is observed across India as Saraswati puja. Households, schools, colleges and music and dance institutions arrange the puja, and students in particular treat it as a day to seek the goddess's blessing on their studies. In many communities the day is also considered auspicious for beginning a child's formal education, for the first writing lesson, or for starting a new course of study or a new creative work.
Vasant Panchami is observed pan-India. The outward forms differ from region to region, but the shared thread is the welcome given to spring and the honour paid to Saraswati.
How the date is fixed
The date of Vasant Panchami is not fixed in the Gregorian calendar. It is determined by the panchang, and the governing rule is simple to state: the festival is observed on Magha Shukla Panchami. The exact Gregorian date therefore changes from year to year and is computed annually from the panchang. The dates shown on this page are taken from that computation.
Two further points explain why the date can appear to shift.
- Tithi at a place. Hindu festival dates follow the tithi, nakshatra or solar ingress at a place. Because the tithi begins and ends at moments that fall differently across longitudes, the observance can move by a day between cities.
- Calendar reckoning. The same festival can be listed a day apart under the amanta and purnimanta systems of reckoning the lunar month.
For clarity, the dates given here are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers in other cities, and readers whose family follows a different reckoning, may therefore see the observance on an adjacent day. That is a normal feature of tithi-based festivals and not a disagreement about the festival itself.
Puja vidhi
The observance of Vasant Panchami centres on Saraswati puja. The details of the vidhi vary by family, region and the institution conducting it; what follows describes the common shape of the day rather than a single prescribed order.
- Setting up the seat. An image or idol of Saraswati is placed and decorated, often with a yellow cloth, since yellow is closely associated with the day and with spring.
- Offering. Flowers, fruits and sweets are offered. Yellow food items are common in many households.
- Worship. The puja is performed with the family or the institution's students and teachers present, and with Saraswati's name and forms recited in her praise.
- Books, instruments and tools. In many homes and schools, books, pens, musical instruments or the tools of one's trade are placed near the deity and worshipped along with her, since they are the means by which learning and art are practised.
- Prasad and sharing. The puja concludes with the distribution of prasad.
Households differ over whether the puja is done in the morning or later in the day, and over which mantras are used. Where a family has its own tradition, that tradition is normally followed. For guidance on personal observance, a qualified jyotishi or the family's own purohit is the appropriate source.
Regional variations
Vasant Panchami is pan-India, and the brief notes only that the observance of Saraswati puja is widespread. Beyond that, customs vary, and it is more accurate to describe the range than to settle on one form.
- Schools and institutions. In many parts of the country the puja is organised collectively at schools, colleges and music or dance academies, with students taking part.
- Household observance. Elsewhere the day is kept at home, with the family's own arrangement of the seat, the offerings and the recitation.
- Beginning of learning. Communities differ on the age and the manner in which a child's first formal lesson is begun on this day.
- Calendar reckoning. As noted above, families following amanta and purnimanta reckonings may observe on adjacent days.
These are differences of custom, not of substance. The festival remains Magha Shukla Panchami, and it remains dedicated to Saraswati.
What to avoid
A few simple cautions keep the observance clear and unhurried.
- Do not treat the date as fixed. Confirm it for your city and your family's reckoning rather than assuming a single Gregorian date applies everywhere.
- Do not mix up the tithi with the weekday. Vasant Panchami is fixed by Magha Shukla Panchami, not by a day of the week.
- Do not read the festival as a personal prediction. It is a day of observance and of Saraswati's worship; it is not a forecast about an individual's studies, career or prospects.
- Do not substitute the festival for guidance on your own chart. For questions about your personal horoscope, consult a qualified jyotishi.
- Do not let differences of custom become disputes. Where traditions differ, both are followed by people who keep the same festival.
