Significance and story

Karthigai Deepam is a festival of light kept in the Tamil month of Karthigai. It is observed on Krittika nakshatra, near the full moon — a combination that gives the festival both its name and its timing. The deity honoured is Shiva, and in many Tamil households also Murugan, whose association with the Krittika nakshatra is well known in tradition.

The observance itself is simple and old: lamps. Rows of small oil lamps are lit at the doorway, on the threshold, along the verandah and in the courtyard. In the Tamil country this is one of the festivals most closely tied to the act of lighting, and the lamps are understood as an offering rather than a decoration.

The most visible expression of the festival is the Tiruvannamalai beacon. On this occasion a great flame is lit on the hill at Tiruvannamalai, and it is this that gives Karthigai Deepam its wider name — a deepam that is seen from a distance, not only within a home. The beacon and the household lamp belong to the same observance, one public and one domestic.

Because the festival is kept in Tamil Nadu, its story, its songs and its food are largely carried in Tamil tradition. Readers outside that region often meet it first through the Tiruvannamalai beacon, and then discover that the same night is kept in ordinary homes with a row of lamps.

How the date is fixed

The date is not fixed by the Gregorian calendar. Karthigai Deepam is observed on Krittika nakshatra in Karthigai, near the full moon. The panchang gives the nakshatra and the tithi for each place and each day, and the festival is kept on the day that carries the required combination.

Two consequences follow, and both are normal rather than errors:

• The date can shift by a day between cities, because the tithi and nakshatra are reckoned for the local place and the local sunrise.
• The date can appear differently in amanta and purnimanta reckonings, which count the lunar month from different points.

For this reason, published festival lists do not always agree. The dates shown on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha, and are stated there rather than in the text above, so that the panchang calculation is visible and can be checked. Readers in other cities may find that their local panchang gives the observance a day earlier or later; that is expected, and the local panchang is the one to follow for household practice.

If you are fixing a time for a personal observance, the general principle is to keep it on the day your local panchang assigns to the festival, and to light the lamps in the evening, after sunset, when the lamps are visible. For anything beyond that — a specific muhurat for a particular purpose — it is best to consult a qualified jyotishi with your own details rather than to generalise from a page like this one.

Puja vidhi

The vidhi for Karthigai Deepam is not elaborate in most homes, and the emphasis falls on the lamps themselves.

• Clean the space — the doorway, threshold and the area where the lamps will be placed.
• Prepare the lamps — clay or metal deepams, with oil and a cotton wick. The number of lamps is a family and regional matter; many households light rows of them.
• Light them in the evening, after sunset, so that the flames are seen against the dark.
• Offer to Shiva, and where the household tradition includes Murugan, to Murugan as well.
• Keep the lamps burning steadily and place them where they will not be knocked over.

In temples the observance is larger, and the Tiruvannamalai beacon is the best-known public form of it. At home, the essential act remains the lighting of the lamp, done with attention and without haste.

Regional variations

Karthigai Deepam belongs to Tamil Nadu, and within that region customs differ from family to family — in the number of lamps, the arrangement of the rows, the food prepared, and whether the observance is centred on the home shrine or on a temple visit. The Tiruvannamalai beacon draws pilgrims from well beyond the state, so the festival is met in two forms at once: the local household observance and the large public one.

Outside Tamil Nadu the same night may be marked differently, or not marked at all. Where traditions differ, it is worth saying so plainly rather than treating one form as the standard. The Krittika nakshatra and the near-full moon are the shared markers; the rest is regional.
