Ram Navami dates 2026
- Ram Navami

Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and story
Ram Navami (राम नवमी) is the observance of the birth of Rama. It falls on Chaitra Shukla Navami — the ninth tithi of the waxing fortnight of Chaitra — and it is kept pan-India, among Hindus in India and across the diaspora.
Rama is the deity of the day. In the Vaishnava reading of the tradition, Rama is the seventh avatara of Vishnu, born in Ayodhya to Kaushalya and Dasharatha. The Ramayana, in its many recensions and regional tellings, carries the story that surrounds his birth: the yajna of Dasharatha, the appearance of the divine payasam, the birth of four sons, and the life that follows. Ram Navami takes that birth as its centre.
Because the observance is tied to a tithi rather than to a fixed solar date, it moves through the Gregorian calendar from year to year. The exact dates for the current and coming years are computed from the panchang and listed on this page.
The day also closes the nine-night period of Chaitra Navaratri in many regions, so the mood is one of completion as well as arrival. For many households it is a day of vrata, of recitation, and of listening to the Ramayana — not a day of public spectacle alone.
How the date is fixed
Ram Navami is fixed by tithi, not by the solar calendar. The relevant tithi is Chaitra Shukla Navami, the ninth tithi of the bright fortnight of the lunar month Chaitra.
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain twelve degrees on the Sun. Because tithis are of unequal length and do not align with sunrise, the day on which Navami is reckoned can vary from place to place. The standard practice is to take the tithi prevailing at sunrise at the location for which the panchang is cast.
Two further points explain why the date can differ between calendars and between cities:
- Amanta and purnimanta reckoning. North Indian calendars commonly use the purnimanta month, South Indian calendars the amanta month. The same tithi can therefore be labelled with a different month name, and the festival can appear on adjacent days in different printed panchangs.
- Location. Sunrise differs by longitude, so the tithi at sunrise in one city may be the previous or next tithi in another.
Dates shown on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers outside Delhi, and readers following a different ayanamsha or a different regional panchang, should treat the listed date as a reference point and confirm locally. For personal charts and muhurta, consult a qualified jyotishi.
Puja vidhi
Observance varies by family and sampradaya, but the common shape of the day is consistent.
- Snana and sankalpa. A bath, clean clothes, and a resolve to keep the vrata for the day.
- Mandir or ghar mandir. Rama is worshipped, often with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. In many homes a small image or a picture is placed on a clean seat, offered tulsi, flowers, fruit and naivedya.
- Recitation. The Ramayana is read or heard — the Bala Kanda in particular, since it contains the birth. Sundara Kanda and the Rama Raksha Stotra are also common. In some traditions the Vishnu Sahasranama is recited.
- Bhajan and kirtan. In the evening, especially in North India, groups gather for kirtan and for readings from the Ramacharitmanas.
- Prasada and vrata. Many keep a fast through the day, breaking it after the puja or at the close of the tithi. Food offered is simple and sattvic; the details follow family custom.
At temples, the day often includes abhisheka, alankara and a shobha yatra. Ayodhya, Bhadrachalam, Rameswaram and many smaller sthala temples hold their own observances.
Regional variations
The core is the same, but the expression differs.
- North India. Ram Navami is closely tied to the Ramacharitmanas tradition, with akhand path, kirtan and processions. In Ayodhya the day draws large gatherings.
- South India. The day is observed as Sri Ramanavami, with kalyanotsava at temples, and in some places with music and cultural programmes. Bhadrachalam in Telangana is well known for its celebrations.
- Maharashtra and the Deccan. The day is marked by vrata, recitation and temple visits, with local processions.
- Diaspora. Communities abroad usually keep the tithi as computed for their own location, so the observed day may differ by a day from India.
Smarta and Vaishnava households may differ in the order of worship and in which texts are read. Both readings are traditional; the brief here does not choose one over the other.
What to avoid
- Do not treat the listed date as universal. It is computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Confirm with your local panchang or temple.
- Do not read the day as a personal prediction. Ram Navami is an observance, not a forecast. No health, financial, marital or legal outcome is promised or feared here.
- Do not substitute the festival for medical or legal advice. For those matters, consult the appropriate professional.
- Do not assume one regional practice is the norm. Where traditions differ, follow your own sampradaya or ask a qualified jyotishi about your personal chart.
Kept simply and with attention, the day is about the birth of Rama, the recitation of his story, and the company of others who keep it.
