Holi
Tuesday, 3 March 2026Phalguna Purnima (Bhadra covers the previous pradosh; Purnima ≥ 3½ prahar today, pratipada vriddhi)

Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.

Significance and story

Holi is a spring festival kept on Phalguna Purnima, the full-moon night of the lunar month of Phalguna, followed by the next day. It is observed across Pan-India, and its two days carry distinct moods: the evening of Holika Dahan, when a fire is lit, and the following day of colour.

The festival is associated with Vishnu and with Krishna. The story most often told concerns Holika, and it is remembered as a reminder that devotion and protection belong together, and that arrogance does not last. Traditions also connect the day to Krishna and the playful colour of Vrindavan, which is why the festival carries both a solemn fire ritual and an exuberant daytime celebration.

Because Holi falls at the end of winter and the beginning of spring, it is also a seasonal marker — a turning point in the agricultural and ritual year, when the old is cleared and the new is welcomed. This is why the observance combines colours with Holika Dahan: the fire is the quiet, inward part; the colours are the shared, outward part.

How the date is fixed

Holi is fixed by the tithi, not by a fixed Gregorian date. It is observed on Phalguna Purnima for Holika Dahan, with the celebrations continuing the next day. The exact Gregorian dates are computed each year from the panchang and listed on this page.

Purnima is the full-moon tithi, and its start and end are measured from the moon's movement. Holika Dahan is traditionally performed during Purnima, and the precise window depends on when that tithi is current at the place of observance. This is why the date can shift by a day between cities, and why the amanta and purnimanta reckonings of the month can place the same festival differently. The dates shown here are for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha.

For a personal reading of how the day relates to your own chart, it is best to consult a qualified jyotishi rather than rely on a general page.

Puja vidhi

The observance has two parts, and families follow them in the order that suits their household tradition.

Details of mantras, offerings and the exact muhurat vary by region, family and sampradaya. Where traditions differ, it is best to follow the practice of your own household or local temple rather than treat one form as universal.

Regional variations

Holi is observed Pan-India, and the ways of keeping it differ from place to place. In many regions the emphasis falls on the Holika Dahan fire and the community gathering around it; in others the following day of colours is the larger public celebration. The Krishna traditions give the festival a distinct devotional colour, while other areas keep it closer to the seasonal and agricultural turn of Phalguna Purnima.

Because the festival follows the tithi, the day itself can fall differently in different cities, and the amanta and purnimanta systems can place the month's end differently. These are not contradictions but differences of reckoning and local custom. Readers in the diaspora often follow the panchang of their family's region of origin, which is why two households may mark Holi on adjacent days.

What to avoid

Holi is a festival of joy, and the guidance here is simple and practical.

Holi marks the full moon of Phalguna with fire and with colour — a turning of the season, and a shared occasion across regions and communities.
