Anant Chaturdashi dates 2026
- Anant Chaturdashi
- Friday, 25 September 2026Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi (noon)
Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and Story
Anant Chaturdashi (अनंत चतुर्दशी) falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi, the fourteenth tithi of the waxing fortnight of Bhadrapada. The day is dedicated to Vishnu, and the name Anant — "the endless one" — is itself a name of the deity, pointing to that which has no beginning and no end.
The observance carries two distinct streams of meaning. In Maharashtra and across much of pan-India, Anant Chaturdashi marks the final day of Ganesh Chaturthi observances, when Ganesh visarjan is performed and the installed murti is taken in procession for immersion. The same tithi is also kept as a Vishnu vrata, in which devotees tie the Anant sutra, a sacred thread, and renew their resolve for the year ahead.
The traditional story associated with the vrata speaks of steadfastness and of the consequences of wavering in one's vows. It is told as a lesson in keeping faith rather than as a promise of specific rewards. Readers interested in the fuller narrative will find it in the Puranic literature; here we keep to the observance itself.
How the Date Is Fixed
Anant Chaturdashi is fixed by the tithi, not by a Gregorian date. The tithi is the time taken for the Moon to gain twelve degrees on the Sun, and Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi is the fourteenth such increment in the waxing half of the lunar month.
Because tithis are not tied to the civil day, the festival can fall on different Gregorian dates from year to year. The exact dates for the current and coming years are computed from the panchang and shown on this page.
Two further points explain why the date can differ between places and communities:
- Place. A tithi begins and ends at a precise moment, so the day on which it is observed depends on local sunrise. Dates here are given for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha; other cities may differ by a day.
- Calendar system. Amanta and purnimanta reckonings place the lunar month differently, which can shift the observance by a day. Both are in wide use across India.
Where a family or community follows a particular panchang, that local reckoning is normally the one observed.
Puja Vidhi
The two observances of the day — Ganesh visarjan and the Anant vrata — are often kept together, but they are distinct in form.
Ganesh visarjan
For households that installed a Ganesh murti on Chaturthi, Anant Chaturdashi is the day of farewell. The murti is worshipped one final time, offered flowers and naivedya, and then carried in procession to a water body, where it is immersed. The visarjan is performed with the same care as the installation, and the return home is marked by the chanting of Ganpati's names.
Anant vrata and the Anant sutra
Devotees observing the Vishnu vrata bathe early, wear clean clothes, and set up a place of worship. A kalash is prepared, and Vishnu is invoked. The Anant sutra — a thread, often dyed with turmeric or kumkum — is tied on the wrist or arm while the Anant form of Vishnu is remembered. The thread is worn through the year and renewed on the next Anant Chaturdashi. In many households the vrata includes a fast, broken after the puja, and the reading or hearing of the Anant story.
Offerings typically include fruits, sweets, and flowers. The details of the vidhi vary by family and by the guidance of one's elders or family priest. For matters concerning one's own chart or the correct procedure for a specific vow, it is best to consult a qualified jyotishi or family purohit.
Regional Variations
Anant Chaturdashi is observed in Maharashtra and across pan-India, but the emphasis differs. In Maharashtra, the day is inseparable from Ganesh visarjan, and the streets fill with processions. In other regions, the Vishnu vrata and the tying of the Anant sutra carry greater weight, and the day may pass without a Ganesh procession at all.
Among Vaishnava communities the vrata is often kept with particular formality, while Smarta households may observe it more simply. Amanta and purnimanta calendars also affect which Gregorian day is treated as the festival. These differences are traditional and are not a matter of one practice being more correct than another.
What to Avoid
Observances on this day are best kept simple and sincere. A few points are commonly mentioned:
- Do not treat the vrata as a bargain. The Anant sutra is tied as a resolve, not as a transaction for a specific outcome.
- Do not neglect the visarjan. If a murti was installed, the immersion is part of the observance and should be done with care and respect for the water body.
- Do not follow a procedure you are unsure of. Where the vidhi is unclear, ask an elder or a qualified jyotishi rather than improvising.
- Do not read the day as a prediction. Anant Chaturdashi is a day of worship and remembrance; it is not a forecast for any individual's health, finances, marriage, or legal matters.
