Significance and Story

Mattu Pongal is the third day of the four-day Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu. It follows Thai Pongal, the day on which the sun begins its northward journey and the harvest is given thanks. On Mattu Pongal, attention turns from the hearth and the harvest to the cattle who made that harvest possible.

The word "mattu" refers to cattle, and the day is set aside for their worship. In many villages the cows, bulls and bullocks are washed, their horns painted, and garlands and bells tied around their necks. They are fed sweet pongal and given rest from fieldwork. The bond being honoured is a working one — the animals who plough, thresh and carry — and also a devotional one, since the cow is held sacred and Nandi is the vehicle and companion of Lord Shiva.

Readers sometimes ask whether Mattu Pongal is a separate deity festival. It is not. The observance is the worship of cattle, and Nandi is honoured within that. The day carries no single origin story that all communities share; it is best understood as a thanksgiving to the animals on whom agrarian life depends, kept in continuity with the wider Pongal cycle.

How the Date Is Fixed

Mattu Pongal falls on the day after Thai Pongal. That simple rule is the whole of its timing: it is not fixed independently, but follows from the date of Thai Pongal.

Thai Pongal itself is tied to the solar calendar. It is observed when the sun enters the sign of Makara, the solar ingress known as Makara Sankranti. Because this is a solar event rather than a lunar one, the date is computed from the sun's movement and read against the panchang for a given place.

Two things follow from this. First, the Gregorian date changes from year to year. Second, the date can shift by a day between locations, because the moment of solar ingress is reckoned for a specific place and time. The exact dates for each year are computed from the panchang and listed on this page rather than stated in prose.

There is a further reason calendars may disagree. Hindu festival dates are read through the tithi, nakshatra or solar ingress at a place, and different regions follow different conventions — including the amanta and purnimanta reckonings of the lunar month. Where these conventions differ, the observed day can differ too. The dates shown here are for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha, which is a common standard for published panchangams. Readers outside that reference may find their local temple or family calendar gives a slightly different day, and that is expected rather than an error.

Puja Vidhi

Observance varies by household and village, but the broad shape of the day is consistent.

The order of these steps and the mantras used differ from family to family and from temple to temple. For personal observance, follow the practice of your own household or the guidance of your family priest.

Regional Variations

Mattu Pongal is observed in Tamil Nadu, and its character is most fully agrarian there. Within the state, village customs differ widely: some places hold cattle races, others decorate and lead the animals in procession, and still others keep the day quietly at home.

The wider Pongal cycle has counterparts elsewhere in India, where the harvest is marked around the same solar transit. Those regional festivals have their own names, customs and deities, and they are not the same observance as Mattu Pongal. It is more accurate to say that the season is shared than that the festival is.

Because traditions differ, this page does not present one form of the ritual as the correct one. Where your family or community keeps a particular custom, that custom is the one that applies to you.
