Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and story
Hartalika Teej (हरतालिका तीज) is a festival dedicated to Shiva and Parvati. It is kept on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya — the third tithi of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada — and it is observed chiefly in North India, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The name carries the sense of a resolve undertaken with effort and devotion. The day belongs to Parvati, who is remembered for the tapasya by which she sought Shiva as her husband, and to the union of the two. Because the observance is directed to Shiva and Parvati together, it is associated with marital wellbeing and with the sincere wish of unmarried women — but the panchang fixes only the day and the tithi; it makes no promise about any individual's life.
The central observance is a nirjala fast — a fast kept without water. This is a demanding vrata, and it is treated as a matter of personal capacity and family custom rather than as an obligation on everyone. Readers who are unwell, pregnant, elderly or otherwise unable to fast without water commonly keep a lighter vrata or observe the puja alone, and that is understood within the tradition as a valid way of keeping the day.
How the date is fixed
The date of Hartalika Teej is not a fixed Gregorian date. It is determined each year from the panchang, by the tithi Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. The exact Gregorian dates for the current and coming years are computed from the panchang and listed on this page, so they are always read from the table rather than from memory.
Two things commonly cause the date to appear to differ between calendars:
- Place. Festival dates follow the tithi, nakshatra or solar ingress at a place, so the observance can shift by a day between cities.
- Calendar system. The same tithi falls on different Gregorian days in the amanta and purnimanta reckonings of the lunar month.
For consistency, the dates shown here are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Where a family or region follows a different convention, its own panchang is the authority for that household.
Puja vidhi
The puja is addressed to Shiva and Parvati. The sequence below is the common shape of the observance; details vary by family and by region, and the family's own tradition should be followed where it differs.
- Sankalpa. The vrata is begun with a resolve, naming the day and the purpose of the fast.
- Snana and preparation. A bath before the puja, and preparation of the place of worship.
- Shiva-Parvati puja. Worship of Shiva and Parvati together, with offerings according to family custom.
- Katha. Listening to or reciting the Hartalika story — the reason the day is kept.
- Nirjala vrata. The fast is kept without water through the day. Those unable to keep it in this form observe the puja and take a lighter vrata.
- Parana. The fast is broken after the puja, according to the family's practice and the tithi's timing for that place.
Timings for the puja and for parana are read from the panchang for the day, since they depend on the tithi at that location.
Regional variations
Hartalika Teej is observed across North India, Maharashtra and Karnataka, and the observance is not identical everywhere. The deity — Shiva and Parvati — and the tithi — Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya — are shared, but the form of the puja, the katha recited, the manner of the fast and the way it is broken follow regional and family custom.
Because the day is reckoned from the tithi at a place, and because amanta and purnimanta reckonings place the same tithi on different Gregorian days, neighbouring regions may observe Hartalika Teej a day apart in a given year. This is a normal feature of tithi-based festival reckoning, not a disagreement about the festival itself.
What to avoid
- Do not treat the date as fixed. Read the computed dates on this page each year; the tithi, not the Gregorian date, decides the day.
- Do not force the nirjala fast. It is a demanding vrata. Capacity, health and family custom decide the form it takes for each person.
- Do not expect the panchang to promise outcomes. The day, the tithi and the muhurat are what jyotish fixes here; questions about one's own chart are best taken to a qualified jyotishi.
- Do not assume one uniform practice. Where North Indian, Maharashtrian and Karnataka customs differ, follow the family's own tradition.
