Significance and story

Ganesh Jayanti, also written as गणेश जयंती, marks the birth of Ganesha. In Maharashtra and Goa the day is often called Maghi Ganesh, because it falls in the month of Magha. It is the yearly observance of Ganesha's appearance, kept on Magha Shukla Chaturthi, the fourth tithi of the bright fortnight of Magha.

Readers sometimes confuse this day with Ganesh Chaturthi, which falls in Bhadrapada. The two are distinct observances of the same deity. Maghi Ganesh belongs to the winter month of Magha, while the larger public festival comes later in the year. Both rest on the same principle: the tithi, not a fixed civil date, decides the day.

The tradition holds that Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings. He is invoked before undertakings, before study, and before worship of other deities. On his birth tithi, households and temples turn that invocation into a full observance — a welcome rather than a request.

How the date is fixed

Ganesh Jayanti is observed on Magha Shukla Chaturthi (midday). The panchang fixes the day by the tithi, and the observance is tied to midday, so the tithi must be current at that hour for the day to be counted.

Because tithis are not equal to civil days, the Gregorian date moves each year. Exact dates are computed annually from the panchang and listed on this page; they are not fixed in advance by rule of thumb.

Two further points explain why calendars sometimes disagree:

Dates shown on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. If you live elsewhere, treat the listed date as a guide and confirm locally with your panchang or a qualified jyotishi.

Puja vidhi

Observance on Magha Shukla Chaturthi centres on Ganesha and follows the household or temple convention the devotee already keeps. A simple, widely followed sequence:

Many devotees keep a fast through the day and break it after the midday puja. Others keep a partial fast or simply take prasada. The vrata is a matter of capacity and family custom; the panchang fixes the day, not the severity of the observance. Consult a qualified jyotishi if you wish to align the vrata with your own chart.

Regional variations

Ganesh Jayanti is observed chiefly in Maharashtra and Goa, where Maghi Ganesh is a familiar household and temple occasion. Homes and shrines are decorated, modaka is prepared, and neighbourhood temples hold a morning puja with aarti.

Outside these regions, the day may be marked quietly or not at all, since many communities reserve their larger Ganesha observance for Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada. Where the two traditions meet — in cities with mixed populations — families often keep whichever observance their elders kept, and sometimes both.

Smarta and Vaishnava households may differ in which tithi they treat as primary when a tithi overlaps two civil days, and amanta and purnimanta reckonings label the month differently. These are genuine variations, not errors, and the prudent course is to follow the local panchang.
