- Ratha Saptami
- Sunday, 25 January 2026Magha Shukla Saptami (sunrise)
Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and story
Ratha Saptami falls on Magha Shukla Saptami, the seventh tithi of the waxing fortnight of Magha. It is dedicated to Surya, the Sun, and is also known as Surya Jayanti. The observance is found mainly in South and West India, where it is kept with a steady, household-centred devotion rather than large public spectacle.
The name ratha means chariot. The day is associated with the image of Surya mounted on his chariot, and with the turning of the Sun's course toward the north — the uttarayana period that traditional calendars mark as a time of increasing light and warmth. For many families the festival is simply a day to honour the Sun as the visible giver of light, health and order, and to begin the morning with that recognition.
Because the day is tied to the Sun, it is also treated as a day of cleansing and renewal. The customs described below are traditional observances; they are not promises of any particular outcome, and readers with personal questions about their own charts are best guided by a qualified jyotishi.
How the date is fixed
Ratha Saptami is fixed by the tithi, not by a solar date. Specifically, it is observed on Magha Shukla Saptami. The Gregorian date therefore changes each year and is computed from the panchang rather than remembered as a fixed day.
Two things commonly cause the date to shift by a day or so between places and between calendars:
- The tithi is reckoned at a particular place and sunrise, so cities in different longitudes can fall on different sides of the tithi boundary.
- North Indian calendars often follow the purnimanta reckoning of the month, while South Indian calendars generally follow the amanta reckoning. The tithi itself is the same; the month label attached to it can differ.
The dates shown on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers outside Delhi, or following a different panchang, may see the observance listed a day earlier or later. That is expected and is not an error in either calendar.
Puja vidhi
Observance varies by family and region, but the following elements are common. They are described here as tradition, not as prescription.
- Early morning bath. Many devotees bathe before sunrise, sometimes with a leaf or a small offering held above the head, and then face the rising Sun.
- Offering arghya. Water is offered to Surya at sunrise, often from a copper vessel, with the recitation of Surya mantras or the Aditya Hridayam.
- Lighting a lamp. A ghee lamp is lit before a picture or image of Surya, and incense and flowers are offered.
- Naivedya. Simple food offerings are made — often something sweet, and in many households a preparation of rice or til. Regional menus differ widely.
- Fasting or a light meal. Some observers keep a fast until the puja is complete; others take a single simple meal. Neither is compulsory across all traditions.
- Reading or listening. The story of Surya and the significance of the day may be read aloud, particularly in households where elders lead the puja.
Households differ on whether the puja is done individually or with a family priest. Both are accepted. What matters in most traditions is that the offering is made at sunrise, when the Sun is actually visible.
Regional variations
Ratha Saptami is observed chiefly in South and West India, and the customs differ noticeably across those regions.
- In parts of South India, the day is closely associated with Surya worship in the home and at temples dedicated to the Sun, and with the offering of arghya at first light.
- In parts of West India, the same tithi is kept with household puja and fasting, with the details of the offerings following local family custom.
- Where the day overlaps with other observances in the Magha fortnight, some families combine or sequence the rituals rather than treating them separately.
Because Smarta and Vaishnava households may follow slightly different reckonings, and because amanta and purnimanta month labels differ, the same tithi can be described under different month names. Both descriptions refer to the same day.
What to avoid
- Do not treat the date on one calendar as the only correct one. Check your local panchang if the day matters for a family ritual.
- Do not read the festival as a prediction about your health, finances, marriage or legal matters. It is a day of devotion, not a forecast.
- Do not assume a single uniform procedure. Follow the practice of your own family and region where it differs from what is written here.
- For questions about your own birth chart and how the Sun's placement applies to you personally, consult a qualified jyotishi rather than relying on a general festival page.
Related observances in the same period include Shattila Ekadashi, Jaya Ekadashi and Sakat Chauth.
