- Akshaya Tritiya

Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and Story
Akshaya Tritiya, known in Hindi as अक्षय तृतीया, is observed on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya — the third tithi of the bright fortnight of the lunar month Vaishakha. The day is dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi. The word akshaya carries the sense of the undiminishing, and the observance is tied to that idea: what is given, begun or offered on this tithi is held to endure.
Because the day belongs to Vishnu and Lakshmi together, the observances naturally combine reverence with giving. Gold purchase and charity are the two practices most commonly associated with it, and both are understood in the same spirit — as acts that are not spent away but set aside, in the case of gold, or passed onward, in the case of charity.
The festival is observed pan-India. Its customs vary by region and by community, but the tithi itself is shared, and the association with Vishnu, Lakshmi, gold and charity runs through the observance wherever it is kept.
How the Date Is Fixed
Akshaya Tritiya is fixed by tithi, not by a Gregorian date. It falls on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, and the exact Gregorian date is computed each year from the panchang. This is why the date moves from year to year, and why it can differ by a day between calendars and even between places.
Hindu festival dates follow the tithi, nakshatra or solar ingress at a given place. A tithi begins and ends at specific moments, and those moments fall at different clock times in different cities. The date can therefore shift by a day between locations. The reckoning also differs between the amanta and purnimanta systems of counting lunar months, which is a further reason two calendars may show the festival on different days.
The dates listed on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers elsewhere — and readers following a different calendar tradition — may find that their local panchang places the observance a day earlier or later. Where traditions differ, it is worth checking the panchang followed in your own region or family rather than assuming a single date applies everywhere.
Puja Vidhi
The puja on Akshaya Tritiya is directed to Vishnu and Lakshmi. Observances recorded for the day include gold purchase and charity, and these are the practices most households and communities organise their day around.
Because customs differ, there is no single vidhi that applies to every home. What is consistent is the focus: Vishnu and Lakshmi are the deities of the day, and the day's merit is understood to lie in what is offered and given rather than in any particular sequence of steps. Families who keep a regular daily puja often simply continue it with the day's deities in mind, adding charity or a gold purchase as the occasion allows.
For those who wish to follow a fuller procedure, the details are best taken from the tradition you ordinarily follow. A qualified jyotishi or your family priest can advise on the form of worship suited to your household, and on any personal chart considerations you wish to raise.
Regional Variations
Akshaya Tritiya is pan-India, and that breadth is precisely why the customs vary. The tithi is shared; the way it is kept is not uniform.
- Calendar reckoning. Communities following the amanta system and those following the purnimanta system may place the observance on different days, since the two systems count the lunar months differently.
- Sampradaya. Smarta and Vaishnava households may differ in the details of worship and in which texts or procedures they follow, even while honouring the same tithi and the same deities.
- Region. North and South Indian observances differ in emphasis and in the local customs attached to the day, though both keep Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya as the festival date.
None of these variations is a departure from the festival. They are the ordinary result of a tithi-based observance being kept across a large and diverse country, and across communities settled far from it.
What to Avoid
A few cautions are worth stating plainly, because the day attracts a good deal of commercial noise.
- Do not treat the date as fixed across all calendars. If your local panchang differs from the date shown here, that is expected. Check the reckoning your family or region follows.
- Do not read the day as a personal prediction. Akshaya Tritiya is a festival observance. It is not a forecast of individual outcomes in health, money, marriage or legal matters, and it should not be treated as one.
- Be wary of sales pressure. Gold purchase is a traditional observance, not a commercial obligation. There is no requirement to buy anything, and no particular seller or product carries the day's merit.
- For personal chart questions, consult a qualified jyotishi. Matters that depend on your own horoscope are outside the scope of a festival guide.
Kept simply — with Vishnu and Lakshmi in mind, and with charity or gold given in the spirit of the undiminishing — the day needs nothing added to it.
