Significance and Story
Bhishma Ashtami is observed on Magha Shukla Ashtami, the eighth tithi of the waxing fortnight of the month of Magha. The day is dedicated to Bhishma, the grandsire of the Kuru line, whose vow, counsel and conduct shape much of the Mahabharata. The observance centres on Tarpan for Bhishma — the offering of water and homage to the departed.
According to the tradition, Bhishma lay on a bed of arrows after the war, his death held back by his own boon until the sun turned northward. He waited through the cold months and chose to depart on Magha Shukla Ashtami, a tithi held to be auspicious for leaving the body. Because he was a brahmachari of unbroken vow and a knower of dharma, the day carries a tone of quiet respect rather than celebration.
Devotees remember him as a teacher as much as a warrior. The Vishnu Sahasranama is traditionally associated with Bhishma, who is said to have recited it in the presence of Krishna and the assembled Pandavas while on that bed of arrows. For many households, the day therefore joins two threads: honouring an ancestor-like figure, and listening again to sacred instruction.
The mood of the day is restrained. There is no large public spectacle attached to it in most places; it is kept at home, at a riverbank, or at a temple tank, with water, sesame and a few simple offerings.
How the Date Is Fixed
The date is not fixed by the Gregorian calendar. It is fixed by the panchang, and specifically by the tithi. Bhishma Ashtami falls on Magha Shukla Ashtami, and the observance is tied to midday. Because a tithi is a lunar unit that does not align exactly with the solar day, the tithi may be current at sunrise and still running at midday, or it may begin later in the day. The convention followed for this page is that the observance is placed where the Ashtami tithi is present at midday.
Two further points explain why the date can move by a day from one calendar to another.
- Place. Tithi timings are calculated for a given location. A tithi that is current at midday in one city may not yet have begun at midday in another. Dates on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers elsewhere may find their local panchang differs by a day.
- Calendar system. North Indian calendars generally follow the purnimanta reckoning, in which the month ends at the full moon; calendars in much of South India and in Gujarat follow the amanta reckoning, in which the month ends at the new moon. The same tithi is named under a different month in each system, so printed dates can appear to disagree even when the underlying astronomy agrees.
For this reason, a family that has always observed the day according to its own regional or family panchang should continue to do so. The exact Gregorian dates for the current year are computed from the panchang and listed on this page.
Puja Vidhi
The observance is simple and water-centred. Practices vary by family, but the common shape is as follows.
- Snan and sankalpa. Begin with a bath and a quiet resolve to keep the day in Bhishma's memory.
- Tarpan. Offer water — often with black sesame — facing south or at a river, tank or sea shore, naming Bhishma and one's own departed ancestors.
- Pitru remembrance. Many households extend the offering to their own forebears, since the day is treated as an occasion for pitru tarpan.
- Bhishma smaran. Recite or listen to the Vishnu Sahasranama, or read the passages of the Mahabharata in which Bhishma speaks on dharma.
- Daan. Give what one can — food, cloth or sesame — to a brahmana or to those in need.
- Vrat. Some keep a fast, often partial, through the day and break it after the midday observance.
Those who wish to align the ritual precisely with their own chart, or who are unsure whether a family custom applies, may consult a qualified jyotishi or their family purohit.
Regional Variations
Bhishma Ashtami is observed pan-India, but the emphasis differs. In many North Indian households the day is folded into the wider Magha observances and the pitru tarpan is done at home or at a nearby ghat. In parts of South India, the same tithi is read through the amanta calendar, and the day may be listed under a different month name while the rite itself remains the tarpan for Bhishma. Some communities treat it chiefly as an ancestor day; others treat it chiefly as a day for the Vishnu Sahasranama. Both readings are traditional, and neither displaces the other.
What to Avoid
- Do not treat this page's dates as universal. They are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha; your local panchang may differ by a day.
- Do not substitute the observance for medical, legal or financial advice, and do not read the day as a promise or a warning about any personal outcome.
- Do not mix amanta and purnimanta month names when comparing calendars; check which system a printed panchang follows before concluding that a date is wrong.
- Do not turn the day into an occasion for fear or for the purchase of remedies. It is a day of remembrance and listening.
Kept simply — water, sesame, a recitation, a gift — Bhishma Ashtami holds its place in the Magha sequence as a day of restraint and respect.
Questions
When is Bhishma Ashtami?
Bhishma Ashtami is observed on Magha Shukla Ashtami (midday); exact Gregorian dates are computed each year from the panchang and listed on this page.
Where is Bhishma Ashtami celebrated?
Pan-India.
Why can the date of Bhishma Ashtami differ between calendars?
Hindu festival dates follow the tithi, nakshatra or solar ingress at a place, so they can shift by a day between cities, and between amanta and purnimanta calendars. Dates here are for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha.
