- Sharad Navratri

Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and Story
Sharad Navratri is the autumn observance of nine nights dedicated to Durga. It falls in the lunar month of Ashwin and is kept from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada through Navami — the bright fortnight, beginning with the first tithi after the new moon and closing on the ninth. The name sharad refers to the season, and navratri to the nine nights of the observance.
The festival is pan-India in reach. While the outer forms vary widely, the inner thread is constant: nine nights given to the Goddess, most often to Durga in her many forms. Devotees read the observance as a period of attention — to discipline, to prayer, and to the many names and forms the tradition assigns to the Divine Mother.
Because the tithi governs the festival rather than a fixed solar date, the nine nights move each year. That movement is not an irregularity; it is how the panchang works, and it is why the same festival can begin on different Gregorian days from one year to the next.
How the Date Is Fixed
Sharad Navratri is anchored to the tithi, not to a solar date. The festival begins on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, the first tithi of the bright half of Ashwin, and runs through Navami. The exact Gregorian dates are computed each year from the panchang and listed on this page.
Two things explain why the date may differ between calendars and places:
- Place. A tithi is defined by the Moon's motion relative to the Sun, and its start and end are reckoned for a particular location and sunrise. Two cities can therefore observe the same tithi on different civil days.
- Calendar system. The amanta and purnimanta reckonings of the lunar month differ, which can shift the naming of the month and, with it, the day assigned to the festival.
Dates shown here follow New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers outside Delhi, or those following a different calendar convention, may see a one-day difference. This is expected and is not an error. For personal observance, follow the panchang used by your family or temple, or consult a qualified jyotishi for your own chart.
Puja Vidhi
Sharad Navratri is observed as nine nights of Durga. The broad shape of the vidhi is shared across regions, though the details are family and lineage specific.
- Kalash sthapana. The observance commonly opens on Pratipada with the setting of a kalash, marking the formal beginning of the nine nights.
- Daily worship. Each of the nine nights is given to the Goddess, with prayer, recitation and offerings according to local custom.
- Navami. The ninth day closes the observance, with the concluding rites of the nine-night period.
Households differ on fasting, on which texts are recited, and on how elaborate the daily puja is. The tradition does not require one uniform form; what is held in common is the nine-night structure and its focus on Durga.
Regional Variations
Sharad Navratri is pan-India, and that breadth shows in how it is kept.
- North India. The nine nights are commonly observed with fasting and daily worship of Durga, closing on Navami.
- Gujarat and western India. The nights are associated with communal dancing and gathering, alongside the daily puja.
- Bengal and the east. The observance is tied to the autumn worship of Durga, with its own local sequence of rites.
- South India. The nine nights are kept with distinct regional forms of the Goddess and their own household and temple customs.
Where Smarta and Vaishnava traditions differ, or where amanta and purnimanta reckonings are followed, the day assigned to a given rite may differ by one day. Traditions differ here; the page does not pick one as authoritative over the others.
What to Avoid
- Do not treat the dates on this page as universal. They are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha; other places and other calendar systems may differ by a day.
- Do not read the festival as a promise or a warning about personal outcomes. Sharad Navratri is a period of observance, not a prediction about health, money, marriage or legal matters.
- Do not substitute this guide for personal guidance. For questions about your own chart or your family's customary vidhi, consult a qualified jyotishi or your family priest.
- Do not treat any single regional form as the only correct one. The observance is pan-India, and its variations are part of the tradition rather than departures from it.
Read alongside the panchang you follow, the nine nights of Sharad Navratri remain what they have always been: a fixed tithi sequence, observed in many forms, across the whole of India.
