Hariyali Teej dates 2026
- Hariyali Teej
- Saturday, 15 August 2026Shravana Shukla Tritiya (sunrise)
Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and story
Hariyali Teej, हरियाली तीज, falls on Shravana Shukla Tritiya — the third tithi of the bright fortnight of Shravana. The name carries its own meaning: hariyali is greenery, and the festival arrives when the monsoon has settled over the land and the fields and trees are at their fullest. It is kept in honour of Parvati, the goddess whose devotion to Shiva is the enduring model of steadfast love in Hindu tradition.
The observance belongs especially to Rajasthan and North India, where it is a day of swings and green — jhulas hung from branches, green bangles, green clothing, mehndi, and gatherings of women. The colour green is not incidental; it mirrors the season itself, the living earth at its most abundant.
Because the day is tied to Parvati, the emphasis in tradition falls on her tapasya and her resolve, not on any promise of a particular outcome for the person observing it. Devotees keep the vrat as an act of devotion and as a way of aligning the household with the rhythm of the season. What a person seeks from the vrat is a matter for their own faith and their own guru; the panchang simply marks the day.
How the date is fixed
Hariyali Teej is reckoned from the tithi, not from a fixed Gregorian date. The tithi is Shravana Shukla Tritiya, and the festival is observed on that tithi as it prevails at the place of observance. Because tithis are measured from the Moon's motion relative to the Sun, the Gregorian date shifts from year to year, and the exact dates are computed annually from the panchang.
Two further points explain why the date can look different from one calendar to another:
- Place. A tithi begins and ends at specific moments. If Tritiya is running at sunrise in one city but has not yet begun at sunrise in another, the observance can fall a day apart.
- Calendar system. North Indian panchangs generally follow the purnimanta reckoning, in which the month runs from full moon to full moon, while many in South India and parts of the diaspora follow the amanta reckoning, from new moon to new moon. The tithi named is the same; the month label attached to it can differ.
The dates shown on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers outside Delhi, and readers whose family tradition follows a different panchang, may find their local date differs by a day. That is normal and not an error. For personal observance, follow the panchang used in your own family or consult a qualified jyotishi.
Puja vidhi
The brief for this page records the observance simply as swings, green, and that is the honest core of it. What follows is described in that spirit — as the customary shape of the day rather than a rigid procedure.
- Worship of Parvati. The deity of the day is Parvati. Devotees offer their prayers to her, often with flowers, fruits and simple offerings at the household shrine or a nearby temple.
- Green in dress and ornament. Green is worn, and green bangles are a familiar part of the day, particularly for married women observing the vrat.
- The jhula. Swings are hung and used — in courtyards, in gardens, from tree branches. The swing is the image most people associate with Hariyali Teej, and it belongs to the day's joy rather than to any formal rite.
- Gathering. The day is observed in company: women gather, sing, and share the occasion together.
Fasting customs vary widely by family and region. Some keep a full fast, some a partial one, and some keep none. The brief does not prescribe a fast, and this page does not either. If you are unsure whether a fast is appropriate for you, that is a question for your family tradition and your doctor, not for a panchang.
Regional variations
Hariyali Teej is chiefly associated with Rajasthan and North India. Within that broad area the day is kept with local colour — different songs, different sweets, different ways of hanging the swing — and families often carry customs that are not written down anywhere.
Outside North India, the same tithi may be observed under a different name or not observed at all, and the month may be labelled according to the amanta rather than the purnimanta reckoning. Where traditions differ, this page names the difference rather than choosing one as correct. Both reckonings are in living use.
What to avoid
- Do not treat this page as a personal prediction. Hariyali Teej is a festival date and a devotional observance. Nothing here forecasts health, money, marriage or legal matters for any individual.
- Do not assume one date fits everyone. If your city or your family panchang gives a different day, follow your own tradition.
- Do not substitute this page for a jyotishi. For questions about your own chart — including vrat, muhurat or personal practice — consult a qualified jyotishi.
- Do not turn the day into a transaction. There is nothing to buy here, and no gemstone, remedy or product is being recommended.
Keep the day as tradition keeps it: green, in company, with Parvati in mind, and with the swing moving.
