Significance and story
Jagaddhatri Puja honours Jagaddhatri, a form of Durga understood as the holder and sustainer of the worlds. The name itself carries that sense — the one who bears up the universe. In Bengal, where this observance is most closely associated, she is worshipped as a calm, radiant presence rather than only as the warrior goddess of Durga Puja.
The festival falls on Kartik Shukla Navami — the ninth tithi of the bright fortnight of Kartik. That single panchang line is the anchor of the whole observance. Everything else — the day it appears on a modern calendar, the hours set aside for worship, the sequence of rites — is worked out from it.
Jagaddhatri Puja follows Durga Puja by roughly a month, and in many Bengali neighbourhoods it carries a distinct character of its own. The image is traditionally serene, often seated and richly adorned, and the mood of the celebration tends toward quiet devotion rather than spectacle. Families and community committees both keep it, and in some towns it is the larger of the two autumnal celebrations.
Because the observance is tied to a tithi rather than to a fixed solar date, it moves each year. Readers who want the current year's Gregorian date, tithi window and puja muhurat will find them listed on this page, computed from the panchang.
How the date is fixed
Jagaddhatri Puja is observed on Kartik Shukla Navami. This is a tithi — a lunar day — not a date on the Gregorian calendar. A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain twelve degrees of longitude on the Sun, so tithis vary in length and rarely line up neatly with sunrise-to-sunrise days.
That has two practical consequences.
- The date can shift by a day between cities. The tithi is judged at a place, and sunrise differs from place to place. A tithi that is current at sunrise in one city may have ended before sunrise in another.
- The date can differ between calendar systems. North Indian purnimanta reckoning and the amanta reckoning used in much of eastern and southern India name the months differently, so the same tithi may be labelled under a different month depending on the tradition followed.
For this reason, published dates for Jagaddhatri Puja occasionally disagree by a day. Neither is necessarily wrong; they are answering slightly different questions.
The dates shown on this page are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. That is a stated convention, not a claim that it is the only valid one. Readers outside Delhi, and readers whose family tradition follows a different reckoning, may find their local panchang gives a different day.
Puja vidhi
The observance is, in its essentials, the worship of Jagaddhatri. In Bengal this takes the form of a structured puja — the deity is invoked, honoured with offerings, and bid farewell at the close of the observance, in the pattern common to Durga worship in the region.
Households and community pandals differ widely in scale and in the number of rites performed. Some keep a short daily worship across the festival days; others follow an elaborate sequence with a priest. Both are accepted forms, and the choice usually reflects family custom, local practice and the resources available.
What is consistent is the framing: the worship is offered to Jagaddhatri as Durga, on the tithi of Kartik Shukla Navami, and it is a devotional observance rather than a transactional one. The panchang supplies the timing; the tradition supplies the form.
For the current year's muhurat — the specific window for the main worship — see the details listed on this page.
Regional variations
Jagaddhatri Puja is chiefly observed in West Bengal. Within the state, practice varies from district to district and from household to household, and some towns are known for celebrations on a larger public scale than others.
Outside Bengal, the observance is far less common, and readers in other regions may not find it kept locally at all. Where it is kept in the diaspora, it is usually maintained by Bengali families and associations carrying a family or community tradition with them.
Because traditions differ, this page does not present one regional form as authoritative. Where your family or local community follows a particular convention — for the month reckoning, the number of days, or the sequence of rites — that convention is the right one to follow.
What to avoid
- Do not treat the date on this page as universal. It is computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Your local panchang may give a different day, and that is expected, not an error.
- Do not mix month reckonings without checking. If your family follows amanta rather than purnimanta, confirm the tithi in your own tradition before fixing a date.
- Do not expect the festival to promise outcomes. This is a devotional observance. Nothing here should be read as a forecast about health, money, marriage or any other personal matter.
- Do not substitute this page for personal guidance. For questions about your own chart and how to time your own observances, consult a qualified jyotishi.
- Do not assume a single correct form of worship. Household practice, priest-led ritual and community pandal worship all exist side by side in Bengal.
