Buddha Purnima dates 2026
- Buddha Purnima
- Friday, 1 May 2026Vaishakha Shukla Purnima (sunrise)
Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.
Significance and Story
Buddha Purnima, also written Buddha Purnima and known in Hindi as बुद्ध पूर्णिमा, is observed on Vaishakha Purnima — the full moon of the lunar month Vaishakha. The day is kept as the birth of Buddha, and it is shared by both Buddhist and Hindu communities across India.
The deity associated with the observance is Buddha / Vishnu. This dual association reflects the way the festival sits within the wider Hindu ritual year: for Buddhists it marks the birth of the Buddha, while in many Hindu households the same full moon is honoured with Vishnu in mind, since Vaishakha Purnima already carries its own devotional weight in the Vaishnava calendar.
Because the observance rests on a purnima tithi rather than a fixed solar date, it moves each year. The exact Gregorian date is computed annually from the panchang and shown on this page. Nothing about the day is fixed in the civil calendar; it is fixed in the lunar one.
How the Date Is Fixed
Buddha Purnima follows the tithi — here, Vaishakha Purnima. A tithi is a lunar day, defined by the changing angular distance between the Moon and the Sun, so it does not line up neatly with the 24-hour civil day. That is the first reason the festival can appear to shift.
The second reason is location. Hindu festival dates are reckoned from the tithi, nakshatra or solar ingress at a place. Two cities can therefore observe the same purnima on different Gregorian dates when the tithi begins or ends near sunrise. Dates on this page are calculated for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers elsewhere — and readers following a different regional panchang — may find their local date differs by a day.
A third reason is the calendar system itself. North Indian purnimanta reckoning and South Indian amanta reckoning arrange the lunar months differently, so the same tithi can be labelled under a different month name. Where traditions differ, this page notes the difference rather than choosing one as correct.
For these reasons, the practical approach is simple: check the date listed here, then confirm against your local panchang and the practice followed in your family or temple.
Puja Vidhi
Observance varies widely, and there is no single mandatory procedure. What follows describes common practice; householders should follow their own family or temple tradition where it differs.
- Snan and sankalp: a clean bath and a simple resolve to keep the day are customary before any ritual.
- Vishnu or Buddha upasana: since the deity is given as Buddha / Vishnu, some households offer worship to Vishnu, others to Buddha. Both are traditional.
- Full-moon darshan: the purnima itself is central. Many keep the day with prayer, reading and quiet reflection rather than elaborate ceremony.
- Dana: giving — food, clothing or support to those in need — is widely regarded as the heart of the observance.
- Vrat: some keep a fast, partial or full, according to capacity and family custom.
In Buddhist settings the day is often kept at a vihara or stupa with prayer, meditation, and acts of charity. In Hindu households it may be kept at the home shrine with lamp, flowers and a simple offering. Both are consistent with the brief.
Regional Variations
The festival is pan-India, observed by both Buddhist and Hindu communities, and its form changes with the region.
- Buddhist centres — Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar and similar places — mark the day with prayer, meditation and charity, and it draws pilgrims and visitors.
- Hindu households often treat Vaishakha Purnima as a Vishnu day, with the Buddha association recognised alongside it.
- North and South differ in month naming because of purnimanta and amanta reckoning, so the same tithi may be described under a different month.
- Diaspora communities usually follow the local temple's panchang, which may use a different place of calculation than New Delhi.
Because of this, a neighbour, a cousin in another city, or a temple in another country may keep the festival a day apart. That is normal in a tithi-based calendar and is not an error in any of the reckonings.
What to Avoid
A few cautions keep the observance clear and grounded.
- Do not treat the date as fixed. It is Vaishakha Purnima, computed annually; the Gregorian date changes.
- Do not assume one panchang fits all. City and calendar system both matter.
- Do not read the day predictively. Buddha Purnima is an observance, not a forecast. No health, money, marriage or legal outcome should be promised or feared from it.
- Do not let commercial claims crowd the day. The essence is worship, reflection and dana.
- For personal chart matters — vrat rules suited to your situation, muhurat for a family rite — consult a qualified jyotishi rather than relying on a general page.
Kept simply, Buddha Purnima is a full-moon day of remembrance, charity and quiet practice, shared across traditions that read the same lunar month in their own way.
