Karva Chauth
Thursday, 29 October 2026Kartik Krishna Chaturthi (moonrise)

Computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri) for New Delhi sunrise. In other cities, and in amanta vs purnimanta calendars, a date can differ by a day.

Significance and story

Karva Chauth is observed on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, the fourth tithi of the waning fortnight of Kartik. It is a fast kept by married women, and it belongs above all to North India, where it is one of the most widely kept vratas of the year. The deity honoured is Shiva-Parvati.

The observance is a vrata in the older sense of the word: a voluntary undertaking, kept with a sankalpa, or formal resolve, and closed with a defined ritual. The day is framed by the story tradition associates with it, in which Parvati is the figure women turn to — she who is herself the model of the married woman's vow, and who grants the strength to complete what has been undertaken. Because the deity is Shiva-Parvati, the fast is understood within the wider Shaiva householder tradition rather than as a separate cult.

The word karva refers to the small earthen pot used in the ritual; chauth simply means the fourth. The pot, the water it holds, and the offerings placed with it are the physical centre of the observance. What the vrata is understood to express — the well-being of the husband and of the household — is stated in the katha recited that evening. Divya Panchangam presents the timing and the muhurat; the meaning of the vow belongs to the family and to the tradition in which it is kept.

How the date is fixed

The date is not a fixed solar date. It is read from the panchang, and it is fixed by the tithi: Kartik Krishna Chaturthi. Because the tithi is a lunar measure and does not map one-to-one onto the Gregorian day, the festival appears on a different civil date each year. The exact Gregorian dates are computed annually from the panchang and are listed on this page from our database.

The Chaturthi tithi must be current at the time the vrata is begun, and the moonrise of that evening determines when the fast is broken. Where the tithi is running at sunrise, the day is generally taken as the vrata day; where it is not, the observance moves to the day on which Chaturthi is present at the relevant time. This is why the date can shift by a day between cities, and between the amanta and purnimanta reckonings of the lunar month. Neither system is in error; they count the month from different points.

Dates shown here are computed for New Delhi sunrise with Lahiri ayanamsha. Readers outside Delhi — and especially in the diaspora — should treat the local moonrise as the deciding factor for the evening, since that is the moment the fast is completed. For a personal chart, or for a family whose tradition follows a different reckonings, consult a qualified jyotishi.

Puja vidhi

The shape of the day is broadly consistent, though details vary by household and region.

Timings for the puja and for moonrise are given on this page from the panchang. Households differ on small matters of order and offering; those differences are part of the tradition, not departures from it.

Regional variations

Karva Chauth is chiefly a North Indian observance, and its regional forms reflect that. In Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh the fast, the sargi and the evening gathering of women are closely similar in outline, with local differences in the katha told and the offerings used. In parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh the day is kept alongside related vratas of the same fortnight.

A related observance, Karadaiyan Nombu, is kept by married women in parts of South India, but it falls at a different point in the year and follows its own regional reckoning; it is not the same festival. Where traditions differ, this page states the difference rather than preferring one form.

What to avoid

Keep the day as your family and tradition keep it. What follows is offered as guidance, not as rule.

For questions about your own chart, a qualified jyotishi is the right person to ask.
